I wondered if the Scarlet-X is working without handle and without LCD - just with a Redmote.
I already own a SmallHD DP6 and a DP4 EVF and a lot of Rail'n'Rig-Stuff and some decent
Canon Glass so I hoped I could get away with a totally reduced Setup like this:

Will the Scarlet-X work wihout handle and LCD - just with Redmote? Are there any issues working like this?

And if I may add two questions:

- If the Scarlet-X crops the Image on 4K to the size of APS-C (crop 1.6) ... can i use my APS-C Lenses? Will they work without vignetting?

- Since I work in Zürich Switzerland. Are there Ac-Power-Options for 220V available?

Thanx for helping me understand ;-)

Hey!

It will work without handle and LCD.
But you will need to plug an HDMI Monitor at least...

Redmote will let you navigate the menus fine.

I think you should aim for 2-3 more batteries... it's a 25min battery... and it takes 2 hours to charge!

Well, you won't have much fun with the batteries and charger, without something to insert the batteries into. That would be the handle.

If you're planning to monitor over SDI and use AC only, that could kinda work, but then you could as well drop the batteries and charger as well, or wait for the batterymodule that will eventually come to the X-package...

Personally I'd take the sidehandle (with place for battery) to control the camera over the redmote...

One 64 GB will get you started, but it won't get you very far...

As to the lenses, I think you're right, but I am not doing the still lens thingy, and wouldn't know for sure.

If I understand this right, you try to "get started" and will fill up as you go.
I actually happen to think that that is a good plan...

Don't overinvest without knowing how you can pay it. OTOH, I would never rent a package like that, so I'd have taken that into the consideration, too.

The sidehandle also makes the camera useable without sticks... Just thought I should mention that little catch... :)

Good luck!

I am looking at things in exactly the same way except mainly for s-3d type applications. So some extra cables… and we engineer our own mechanics and optical systems, so we will remove the canon mount. But nice to have as I have EOS to Nikon adaptor so that I can also use my ZF (Zeiss photographic primes) from time to time. Also looking forward to the M mount.

So I have placed an order for a couple of base “brains” with the understanding that I will at the appropriate point get more focused sales advise at the time for what we need.

If I know before anyone else I will let you know but I’m sure there are lot of folks out there that have a good “handle” on the question you pose.

The Redmote’s are on backorder…?

Cheers,

Eric

PS. my post is late so THANKS for helping out your Scarlet "brothers"...

Hi Sascha,

Just wanted to confirm I ordered a Redmote and my bombsquad rep advised the Redmotes are on backorder as Eric mentioned, so could be a while and something important to consider. Perhaps you might be able to pick one up from the used section.

25 mins only on the battery? Can someone confirm that? Someone else had posted 2 hours (no I didn't misread the charging time)
So I got three... will probably need to get a coupe more though if thats the case.

Best Wishes
Lliam

Thanx for your inputs ... and ehm ... good point Gunleik!
Somehow i though the Redvolts just snap onto the Brain "somewhere" ... just recognized "somewhere" is called "Handle" ;-)

I had to read the full Epic manual cover to cover before I figured that one out.

For S-3d especially sided by side precision shooting we can’t use a handle. The power requirement range of voltage seems quite generous to say the least. Might look at conditioned power supplies for field use if the cabled battery packs /battery modules are not available when we need them.

Cheers,
Eric

See yah gonna be racking up the goodies!

Nice One!

BTW what kind of glass you thinking of these days?

Epic is more or less 20 mins per redvolt. 25 sounds reasonable for the Scarlet... Until you start using all those juicy connectors and HDRx and slomo and other fun stuff that eats the batteries...

Cheapest way to get power into the box, is probably an IDX V-mount plate with a RED/Epic/Scarlet LEMO adaptor of sorts...

OTOH, you'd need a way to mount that, unless you're happy with the belt-clip (which I happen to like a lot...)

Pretty close to my plan, if I pull the trigger:

Scarlet Brain
Side Handle
2 RedVolts
Travel Charger
2 64GB SSDs

I plan on getting a small, HDMI monitor from a third party, a zoom lens, and tripod.

I'll be adding on an IDX V-mount plate and some V Mount batteries in the future, as well as a RedMote and more SSDs. And more lenses, obviously. I'd like to eventually get either the Red quick release plate or something similar, as well as some rods, matte-box, and some sound equipment. I could forget the side handle upfront and just head straight for IDX V-mounts, but it will cost a little more upfront, and I'll need a way to easily grab onto Scarlet anyways.

I've got the advantage of having done a ton of DIT work for the Red One, so I've got a good idea of what 64GB of footage is, how to handle it, and how to juggle media.

Hi Nick, can you please let me know which 3rd party HDMI monitor are you considering?
I ordered for the PL mount pack, I will change my order if I can get a good alternative for monitor.

You cannot use te iPad as a monitor...

There are monitors with better resolution that aren't that shiny, like this:
http://www.smallhd.com/Products/DP6.html

Includes anamorph desqueeze and a lot of other fun stuff

TV-Logic has one, too.

The touchscreen has its quirks, but it is maturing!
I do think that once you get it in your fingers on the handle, you'll probably navigate that as fast if not faster.

Remote like an iPad/iPhone app (like on the F65) would've been nice...
Including waveforms/Histograms and all fun GUI stuff (dreams on...). Even maybe an image...

V-Mounts are probably your cheapest/best bet. I guess that's where the former poster read about 2 hours of batterylife. I haven't seen 2 hours myself, but "long".

Cool. I already got a DP6 and a DP4 from SmallHD ... im a big Fan of their Monitors ... glad to hear, they work with Scarlet as well ... coming from a 7D i have the HDMI Versions of the Screens not the SDI ... does all the UI-Stuff work on the HDMI Output too ?

Thanks Gunleik,
What accessories do we have to purchase with the monitor. So just the SDI monitor works with the Scarlet?

Can't see why that shouldn't work.

Paul Leeming posted images of his plasma being driven through HDMI with menues and all from the latest Epic Betabuild.

WOW!!! glad they are making a quad charger!! Hopefully this is something that can improve in future generations of cameras.
