  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDucation

We can explore any part of the world where there is interest in holding these classes and the proper resources are available to teach (Proper projection and classroom/soundstage space, etc.) If there is an easy way for people to let us know that they would be interested in us holding classes in a particular region, and the kind of student numbers we would expect to have in the class, we can plan accordingly.

Regarding the extensive training materials, they are for the students that took the class - not to be re-distributed, as they are supporting material for the course, and would not be of proper value outside of the course.
Reducation worldwide, really cool.
Ted, do you have some news about the possibility for previous alumni to watch online video presentations?
I'd like to continue my reducation from my couch before attending the master classes :smile5:

Next Reducation Schedule

Next Reducation Schedule

Anyone knows when the next Reducation is scheduled after the December one?

Sheraton Discount Block was overbooked... so no discount :( Bummer.

Any other DECENT hotels that are "walkable" and under $200/night with taxes?

Right now the Hotel is going to cost me more than the workshop... and I'd rather spend that on EPIC
accessories :)

thanks!

EDIT: No response here, so I "Named my Own Price" and got the Westin Bonaventure for $99/nt 2-3 blocks away from Sheraton and slightly closer to Reducation...

We are having meetings about the 2010 REDucation schedule now. I'll be traveling again all over Asia for the next month and hopefully before the end of the month we will have something up here and on the REDucation.net site

I'd like to gauge some interest in having a REDucation class right before NAB in Vegas this year, so those coming could extend their trip and spend some immersive time learning RED before they head to NAB - let me know if this is interesting to you all and we'll start exploring the possibility and keep you posted.

Good additional resources for RED ONE learning and preparing before you shoot

Good additional resources for RED ONE learning and preparing before you shoot

Good additional resources for RED ONE learning and preparing yourself before you shoot.

I want to mention to those visiting this thread, a couple of other valuable ways to learn about RED.

*Jay A. Kelley produced (and stars in :-) *the RED 101 DVD - it's quite comprehensive and a good starting point if you like an audio / visual way of learning. *Jay is a super early RED ONE adopter that works with his camera professionally on a regular basis, He really knows the gear and how to use it.

It's not meant to be a learning tool for those already well versed in the camera (although it's a good refresher for those like me that work with the camera in some fashion almost every day) It's well designed and executed to give you the run down of the camera, its functionality, the menu structure etc. * It covers how to set up projects and use the internal tools of the RED ONE to expose the camera, set up the camera for various styles of shooting for different types of projects and deliverables and a number of other needed areas of learning to be ready to get great results from your RED ONE shooting.

The DVD covers quite a lot of info, and Jay is on camera talking to you for a lot of the video - His homespun style is fun and enjoyable, it's not a a flat, boring instructional DVD - he's got lots of his personality weaved in there. *I would recommend taking watching it in small to medium sized chunks, and not watching it all in one sitting, while having the RED ONE operations manual as a reference point to review each section that's covered (a free download here: *http://www.red.com/support)

Jay covers the RED pretty much from all angles to get you primed and ready to shoot, and a bunch of 3rd party gear as well. *Note that RED did not have a hand in producing this, so there are some things in his video we may not totally agree with (different opinions on certain things is what makes life interesting), but overall I wouldn't recommend it if if didn't do a good job handling the material and covering what is needed to make the right choices when jumping into RED, which it does very well.

If you like comprehensive reading, Noah Kadner, another very early RED adopter that has been heavily involved in the training and instruction of many digital tools for our industry authored a book called RED: The Ultimate Guide to using the Revolutionary Camera.

Noah's book covers the RED ONE, pretty much soup to nuts, with lots of real world examples of the camera's use. *He's got extensive explanations of the theory and methodology behind the camera, *a vast amount of info about post production choices and best practices for taking RED footage to the big and small screens, and lots of really valuable information along the way for shooting, on set technician *practices, etc.

Noah brings a lot of his personal experiences with the Camera and his background into the book as well as experiences from a number of high profile professionals working with the RED. * *It's a pretty lengthy, in depth book - so if you are looking for a quick start guide to the RED, this is not that book - if you are looking for a meaty read, that shows how many different approaches you can take to accomplish great work with the RED ONE - this is that resource.

In our REDucation classes, we focus on hands on, immersive learning for a dedicated period of time (it's kind of like a week of summer camp to get yourself really RED to work at a fully professional level with the RED) * *Jay's DVD and Noah's book are great ways to dive into the RED world as well, at your own pace and in your own time. *

I'll let the creators of these resources weight in here on the best ways to order their DVD and book — they might have some discounts for those checking out the REDucation thread.

Nothing can substitute for working with the RED ONE camera on a regular basis of course to get your skills honed - but doing some homework before going on your first RED shoot is a great idea, and brushing up on you're learning in various ways is a certainly not a bad idea ether!

Got ya! I hope you didn't forget the promise to stop by my little company this time around :)

Also, I hope you will have the forth Reducation in Jan or Feb. I'll be there for sure.

Cool, I bought them both as a primer/refresher prior to REDUCATION :)

Especially cool for me, was the history of RED and its founders, I was not aware of all the collective backgrounds... being a late adopter who jumped the line.

Also love the pundits chiming in each chapter Noah. Well done!

hehe, that was just before he talked to us.

Ted, I definitely have great interest in having the REDucation event in Las Vegas in the days just before NAB...

Other's please chime in if you also are wanting it to become a reality... :001_cool:

i would like to thank everyone i met at reducation this week. it was absolutely brilliant.

and by the way, for those that don't already, a ROCK SOLID practice from now on should be for you to get a Von Card, and use it to get your color balance bang on in future RED shoots.

For those that don't know, the Von Card is otherwise referred to as an 18% grey card. You should shoot it in every lighting setup, where the subject will be, and use that to white balance in Red Alert, or RocketCine to get your color balance just right. This technique is quite solid, and will yield VERY good results in getting nice skin tones, etc.

I wanted to share one of my favourite lessons that I learned this week at Reducation. And if you haven't had the pleasure of meeting Von, I hope one day you will........

The Von's 18% gray card trick works really well, I use it since the first Reducation

Just to add little comment to Von's Card it's great idea. Von also has practical back focus test chart plate, I'll say another A+ idea.

Cheers,
