  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDucation

Okay, let's see if we can get this thread back on track.

REDucation #002 starts in a week, there are a few slots still available. Lot's to be learned...we'll be using the RED Rocket going into IGI and Creative Bridge's 4k Power Window for real time playback of the 4k material we shoot in class, lenses from RED, Zeiss, Angenieux and Fujinon, gear from Element Technica, Redrock Micro, O'Connor, and many others, Ted, Michael Cioni, and Steve Freebairn teaching, Von Thomas assisting, great food, an amazing location.

Let me know if you have questions, register at www.reducation.net.

November Reducation cancelled

November Reducation cancelled

The main reason, I was told, was that some sponsors had conflicting commitments and wouldn't be able to attend.
Also I don't think there were enough numbers in the November course, so November students can take the December course or wait till next year.

Wow, that sucks. Hopefully the october one is going well?

Maybe this could be a nudge to branch out to other locations. Even on the other side of the states Im sure there are lots of people who just couldn't make it out to LA, for whatever reason.

I notice there are more and more alternatives popping up every day all over the world. (albeit ones unaffiliated with RED)

REDucation was great and to those that havent been, if you get the opportunity to go then snap it up!

Don't read too much in your tea leaves about why we got rid of the Nov. class. When we did our scheduling months ago, we didn't quite figure that doing 2 classes about a month apart would be a bad idea, so we fixed it.

There is so much logistical prep to put on each class, that we need to spread them apart a bit, so early Dec seemed like the best time to run another class, and allow those that signed up for the Nov class to move into this one.

The folks that do all the prep work are the true unsung heros of these classes, it's pretty much like prepping for a major feature movie start each time, multiple camera packages and computers, a 2k and 4k projection system, etc.

The current class is going really well, We learned a tremendous amount on how to improve it from the first class and put a lot of that into play, and it's working.

I'm on a very light schedule due to my surgery recovery, so I spend a few hours there each day when I can, but Michael and Steve are taking the lions share of the teaching and doing a great job.

There is lots of hands on prep, shooting, viewing footage on a 4k projection system in real time, and we are heading into 3 days of post production now, where the students will be learning best practices for editing, DI grading and finishing for various deliverables, all with hands on learning.

Some of the staff have been snapping pix of the class in action, so they will post some up when they are free.

The next time I have some computer time, I'll put some more info up about what we are thinking to evolve the classes from where they are now. I could use a lot of feedback on what forms it should take, where we should hold more classes, and how we evolve it… it's a part of RED just like everything else, so change is good.

Sorry Ted,
Didn't mean to tread on your toes, there was just no official word on this thread about the cancellation.
Im sure the class will be awesome, that's why Im flying halfway round the world to do it!
I'm looking forward to being "Reducated" in December and getting the improved reducation experience.

This will be on the new RED.COM when its finished.

Yeah I look forward to it as well. I brought 3 of our kids (ages 14-17) who shoot on the RED or worked on crew to the First REDucation Community Day. And saw a few interesting toys. But the nomenclature was abit over their heads. But still they still shoot with the Red .

With the RED being relatively costly (since we have two on order from Silverado Systems) we are putting alot of our kids on that even playing field as public schools. (most of our tribal schools are charter schools or have extended film projects which the public schools dont cover)

Love to see what footage or lessons were learned from the first sessions from the students perspective.

-thanks.

As promised, some additional thoughts on where REDucation goes from here to discuss and get feedback:

(I'll be posting some pix of REDucation class #2 later today)

First thing I've noticed is that a 7 day immersive class is highly beneficial for those traveling in, and committing a week of their lives to get all this valuable info in one intense session, with a lot of hands on learning. Since Production and Post are so intertwined in the RED world, it really makes sense to take the full course, both Camera and Post. The few that have broken it up into 2 classes have told me that when they came back this time to take the post part of REDucation, it was invaluable.

Something to note however - I've talked to a lot of people that have told me that 7 days back to back is not possible for them with their current work schedule.* So in addition to our 7 day sessions, what do you all think about a once per week 2 hour class in the evening, that runs over 7 weeks.* First starting in LA, then rolling out to other cities worldwide as we gauge the student demand for this format. *So for lack of a better way to describe it - this would be REDucation's version of night school.

It would be great to get a sense of how many people would be interested in this learning format, (with an understanding that we would be focused on the local LA market and nearby first - then once it's honed we can launch other US cities and international cities.)

One more 7 day REDucation class here in LA, and we believe we will be ready to take this show on the road.* We have our thoughts on what other markets in the USA and Internationally will be the most popular places, but it would be good to have your feedback.* We target between 30 and 40 students for each 7 day class, so if you think your city would be a good host, and would have that level of interest from students locally or within easy travel distance, please let us know.

The current REDucation 7 day classes are filled with high level expert instructors, some of the most experienced people in the biz, delivering a comprehensive curriculum on the camera and post side, and it has opened up some discussion about taking it to the next level - so we are beginning to discuss Master Classes for REDucation, for high level continued education on very specific sub-sections of the overall class we teach.

Initial ideas for master classes would be as follows:

DOP track - learn from Top RED DOPs advanced lighting, exposure, and lensing. In depth learning of various RED shooting formats including 4.5k and Anamorphic, and on set DP logic for on location, and in studio client and Director/Producer monitor viewing. *Learn various slo-motion modes and shutter angles, remote triggering, time lapse, etc. *Learn various options for viewing dailes on large screens and small screens, in both HD and 4k resolution.

DI track - - learn from experienced RED DI colorists and Post Production Supervisors the process of finishing commercials, music videos, and feature movies of all budget levels, using an array of both desktop level and heavy iron level tools. *Learn desktop color correction and big system color correction, and the benefits and best uses for both styles of work. *Learn conforming and finishing for various projects at different budget levels.

Creative Editing track - -* - learn from experienced RED Offline and Online editors the various best recommended practices and options for NLE offline editing, NLE online editing, and Finishing and Delivery for commercials, music videos, and feature movies of all budget levels, using the most popular NLE choices, *FCP and Avid and the up-and coming offline and online editing solutions, Premiere and Vegas, that support RED.

Producer/Production Manager track - - learn from experienced Producers, Line Producers and Production Managers about budgeting and prepping for a RED job, crewing, gear and other aspects of RED studio and location production.* Also learn about budgeting for offline editing, online editing and Finishing for various types of projects shot on RED.

Visual FX for RED work - - learn to prep visual FX shots for the RED in various color space to deliver to the DI and Finishing systems on the market that are most in use on projects. *Learn the various 2D and 3D animation programs and 2D and 3D compositing programs and how they interface with RED jobs, and what type of support and optimizations have been engineered into these programs to enhance the RED workflow for FX work.

These classes will be master level classes, as a student you would be expected to have a basic working knowledge of production and post, and want to learn the high level expertise that comes from experienced professionals in the field with many RED jobs under their belt.* These classes would be designed to be relatively small, between 10 and 15 students per class.

Looking forward to your ideas, thoughts and feedback on all of this.

Ted, the Master classes is certainly a good progress from the Reducation 101 class. I presume these classes will be conducted one after the other - Lim

I am a big fan of education in general and believe it is of particularly high value in Red-ville, to wit:

I have seen a lot of very bright people with years of experience in image making who make incorrect assumptions about various attributes of the Red camera system (lens to deliverable) that needlessly handicap their ability to get the results they intend.

I have seen well established production companies shy away from the RedOne because they don't want to re-train staff and in general fear the unknown.

Producers need a short course on data-centric workflows that gives them enough information to manage a project that uses the RedOne. Right now it often seems like new costs are being added but where are the promised savings? One common reason is trying to force feed the data from the camera into a workflow designed for film or tape. Some of the anecdotal stories about format conversions and finishes direct from proxies are the height of hilarity - as long as its not your project.

In larger projects there is a lot of decentralized decision making. People who are experts in specific areas collaborate with other highly talented craftspeople in myriad ways. The efficacy of the lingua franca used on a daily basis in the industry is reliant on common definitions and built on lessons learned the hard way. How about a digital cinema glossary and some successful case studies for reference?

I applaud Ted, Micheal, Jeff, Steve, Von and everyone involved in mounting REDucation and am even more enthusiastic about expanding the mission beyond just grooming technically proficient operators of the technology.

Bottom line - its a lot easier to find the promised land with a map.

Cheers - #19

I'd second (third?) the request for the master classes to be run back to back. Would make it much easier for those of us who are travelling.

Thanks for the quick feedback - My first instinct is that these Master classes would run 2 to 3 days each - we could certainly schedule them back to back for those coming from far away. I am trying to gauge level of interest, and what master classes would have the most interest in people attending, so if you have that input, please add it here.
