REDucation LA - Shoot, Post, Present Class 07/15

Last week was a fantastic experience as RED Digital Cinema completed yet another successful REDucation camera training seminar. Along with assisting with the three day camera class, I was fortunate enough to be asked back to lead the additional 2 day "Shoot, Post, and Present" class, which is an immersive two day elective course designed around putting the skills learned in the previous class to use in a real-world scenario.

I've had the privilege to not only lead these classes, but also write and direct the shorts that we shoot, and it's been a wonderful experience each time. For this class, the students were given the assignment to breakdown an action/spy/comedy short, titled "Bad Connection", and shoot it using the tools provided, which included 2 RED EPIC DRAGON packages, Leica Summicron-C Lenses, Lights from Dadolight, as well as a lot of great AKS, such as a Dana Dolly, Doorway Dolly, DJI Ronin Gimbal, and Heden Remote Focus. The following day, with the help of a professional editor, they assembled their cut as well as added a grade, music, sound effects, and visual effects.

The class consisted of 15 students from all over the world and was broken into two units tasked with shooting various setups. We ended up getting a rough cut done and screened it on a Sony 4K projector.

I want to extend my thanks to everyone involved that made the class a huge success. Shooting the short was pretty ambitious, as there were two simultaneous units shooting, but we got some great footage in the can.

Just a reminder, for those of you signing up for the upcoming 3 day REDucation training in Los Angeles (Burbank), we also will be offering an extended 2 day "Shoot, Post, and Present" class.

Details are still being ironed out as to the location, but here is some more information about the class, which has a small group of students shoot a real-world short film on the first day, and do post (editing, grading, graphics, sound) the following day, with a screening of the rough cut at the end of the day. Basically, taking the skills learned in the first 3 day core class, and applying them to a narrative piece. We will have actors and some crew brought in to help with the production while students get lots on hands on time in various shooting styles throughout the first day. Then the following day, a post supervisor oversees the editorial process, guiding the students in completing a rough cut of their film, which is viewed in 4K at the end of the second day.
