  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedTrip

Magic Number?

Magic Number?

Im trying to export my final cut XML to RedTrip but keep getting this in Terminal:

RedTrip.pyc -translate -infilename=/Users/mac/Desktop/Sequence2.xml -noHandles ""
RuntimeError: Bad magic number in .pyc file

You need to upgrade python to 2.4 or 2.5. Macs come standard with 2.3.

Sorry, this started with the original script, I'll put it in the instructions.

After dropping FCP XML into droplet it says: "Can't make window into type reference." Any idea why?

ibloom. You are a lifesaver doing this!

Ian,

Next three to four weeks I'm going into the bunker and doing Red testing full time. I will implement RedTrip and give you as much feedback as possible. It's great that you're working on this.

This weekend we're doing our first commercial with Red, and plan to use Redtrip to make our final colored spot. From my first test yesterday, most of the clips came in just fine, but one clip didn't come in so well. Are there any limitations of mixing 4k and 2k or any other specs? I can't think of any other reason why this one clip won't pull in using the correct in and out points. I am excited though. Thanks a million Ian.

Tough to say man without looking over the stuff. If you put all the outputs and xml files in a zip I can try to debug it.

As far as I know their isn't much difference mixing 2K and 4K.

If it's just one clip, your probably fine though, just match it up by hand.

IBloom

Don't add Time Ramps or Retimings to the clips at this stage. Probably thats the problem at the moment Strongbad_2Z. Ian works on it and he is doing a GREAT JOB !!!!
@Ian: Have to go on location now. Will test this evening the new project.

best regards
rainer

Time remapping will likely work if you don't transfer handles.
In fact I think the whole thing works better in that mode. Just a longer render, but reccommended because you can do more with the clips.

Here's the fcp project, xml from fcp, and the redtripped xml. I haven't gone from Redcine to Fcp yet as I was just troubleshooting this one clip issue. And you are correct, if it's just one clip, I can manually do it which isn't a problem. I'm also not entirely sure what all the clips were. It was a non-scientific test to see if I could even make the round trip from fcp to redcine then back to fcp. The real test will be in a couple hours when a rough of the spot is edited. As far as I know, all I did in the sequence was pull in a few shots, make them shorter, and moved them around and such, then did the xml stuff. No time remapping or craziness going on. I also did say "yes" to transfer handles because that's most likely what we'd actually end up doing (just exporting the final edited spot instead of all the footage). Thanks for your help and input. Greatly appreciated.

Ian,

I created a test sequence and tried to follow the directions on redhax. droplet one works fine for me as well but when I use droplet two it generates the following code and does not spit out the roundtrip xml.......

When I exported the clips from Redcine, it only created one .mov
Does this seem right to you?
Can you see my error in this script?

Thanks!

If you are only getting one big clip out of Redcine, you need to check your file specification in Redcine. It should match the default EVENT#Z/#F#S.E.

Otherwise email me your Redcine xml, that you exported from Redcine.

I just want to reiterate what I said at the top of this thread:
" a preliminary version of the roundtripping software from FCP to Redcine and back using XML up now.
This is an Alpha...strictly for those looking to test it out and see what I've been doing.
"

It's great if you can get some work done with this today, but don't start planning on using it as part of a real workflow. That's not appropriate.

Alpha means proof of concept for the developer.

Boy those are good words as I think a lot of us who are post people only are trying, grasping, struggling to get some kind of consistent workflow on posting RED. I really comes when the clients start asking so when we see something like RedTrip (even something alpha) that is working at all we really try and make good use of it. It'll get there in time but again, when clients are asking, we are trying!

Ian

When i try and import the xml created from the Step2 droplet back into fcp it asks me for a translation document?? Any ideas??

To put this in perspective a bit -

I talk to, or iChat with Ian almost every day.

He is NOT a computer software company. He is a cinematographer.

He just happens to be VERY smart and have a pretty serious HACKER (oh ... I mean computer science) background.

But if you think about it, this is one guy in Brooklyn, who didn't want to wait for Apple or anyone else, who started this little "Trip" to get a workflow working for HIMSELF and his CLIENTS. He has been taking significant time away from his real job (shooting) to work on this. I have one word for Ian -

APPLAUSE.

Mark is right,

Mr. Bloom, I to his friends, is one example of many in this community that
has stepped up and given us a real solution that could save lots of time and lots of money.

As with LART I would like to call out all who would benefit from Ian's work
to make a small donation for the cause as a thank you for his hard work.

I would post the link to the donation box, but it is not active, Ian?

I advised Ian against the donation thing. I told him he should charge a small fair amount for the release version of the app - as he will need to provide some initial support and upgrades -

personally, I think the price of one CF card would be more than fair. I mean, no matter how cheaply you value your time - that's an instant ROI on ANY paying job.

But that is all up to Ian. This is just my 2 cents.

Thats perfectly fine. One should get compensated for their time and talents. Expecting things for free all the time is pretty tacky. Although it is suggested not to use this on real projects as it is still Alpha, it has worked pretty good for our needs so far. I would like to see some way that the redcine edl and droplet 2 connect to an image sequence or change the extension in the edl of the used files. Maybe it already does and Im not doing it right. But on things that need better color control than redcine allows, we most likely will take dpx's into color, and I don't want to loose my edl just because I went to an image sequence instead of mov's if that makes sense.

Hey, double the APPLAUSE to Ian here! Being a post guy I can say that to me and my clients the RED camera is really only as good as the post workflow which isn't quite there yet. I think we all forgive a lot since this is so new and revolutionary. Those tireless efforts of Ian are making it better. Hell, he was online last night at something like 4 AM! It's that kind of dedication that will make all this work in the end.
