  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedTrip

I guess something was wrong with one of my clips. Once I removed that one edit, handles started working fine.

Now I am rendering 4k DPX files and will try to use Automatic Duck to send my FCP project to AE for online.

Thanks

Let me know how that goes with Automatic duck.
Which clip needed to be removed to open in Redcine?

So question. I've been able to bring edits into Redcine just fine, but after I set my settings in Redcine, export quicktimes, and try Droplet 2, it can't find any of the files, and not sure if I'm entering my files correctly. Anyone who has successfully made the roundtrip can you shed some light? I'll explain my process so as to help better identify my problem.

First I export all my footage to DV50 (and I add _DV50 to each of my files ie. "A002_C080_080221_DV50.mov"). I edit off of those. After edit, export XML convert it to Redcine XML with Droplet. Settings I choose there are "Use Custom Suffix Substition" and add _DV50.mov to the next field. "Yes" to transfer handles and let it do its business. All that part works just fine. I import it into Redcine and it works perfectly. Now once in Redcine, I set my project resolution to 1080, I frame my shots accordingly, color correct them, and set my output to Quicktime ProRes HQ. In my filename setting I have it say #F#SProResHQ.mov (Input file name was the only thing I checked in addition to the default #S, and I added ProResHQ). I set my output folder to a folder I created called FINAL RENDERS. I hit render, and everything renders out just fine.
***Now here is where I have the problems***
I can't seem to get Droplet 2 to see my rendered files or re-connect anything. When I drop my redcine XML into Droplet 2, it comes up with the first field, I choose ok (although it has added "\" wherever there is a space). In the second field I type in the directory to which I rendered out my files (FINAL RENDERS instead of the default). In the third field I change it from the default to what my Filename Specification was in Redcine (#F#SProResHQ.mov). Then I click "Use Custom Suffix Substitution" (since that's what I did in Droplet 1), and I replace _M with _DV50 since that's also what I did in droplet one and say "Yes" to transfer handles. And then it tries to do something, but the IOError comes up saying essentially that there is no such file or directory (referring to my XML).

Anyway, essentially my questions are regarding droplet 2. Where do my rendered files need to be in relation to the XML and in relation to the original R3D files? Am I entering the correct information into the fields? Thanks for any help that can be given on this.

IBloom,

I ran into a couple minor problems.

The XML file RedTrip created imported to AE with AutomaticDuck just fine.

My problem is I rendered DPX sequences out of Redcine, but the XML files reference quicktime files with the same filename as the reference files.

I want the new XML roundtrip file to reference the DPX files I created and use the project settings I set in Redcine.

Here is the workflow I was planning:

1. Edit low rez ref files in FCP
2. export XML
3. convert XML to Redcine
4. open XML in Redcine
5. make any changes in Redcine (change project size to 4k, color, etc)
6. render 4k DPX files from Redcine
7. save Redcine
8. convert Redcine to XMLroundtrip
9. import XMLroundtrip into AE with Automatic Duck
10. online project in 4k in AE (add transitions, color correct, composite, etc)
11. render out final versions from AE

When FCP supports 4k and has the same render quality as AE, then I won't need to go to AE.

Maybe I need to get Gluetools. I think that will make a Quicktime file that references the DPX files. That QT files might work with your XMLroundtrip file.

Thanks for all your hard work.

Well for starters, does Redcine create seperate files if you don't use seperate folders option? The default filespec that I put into RedTrip is pretty good, I'd just add proResHQ to the end.

Could be a problem with the Filespec calculator in RedTrip. Send me all the files dude and the results of ls -altR /your/output/directory/*

It's not setup for DPX files yet, but, I'm assuming it will be easy enough just to reference the first image in the DPX sequence. But truly I haven't been testing this.

If you can tell me how to make an FCP sequence that references DPX sequences, that would be a big start in moving towards your workflow.

Ian

Ian, Gluetools will ref the DPX seq by itself.. so your app just needs to ref the DPX wrapper glue tools creates. Although I think the current version works within FCP after import of a dpx seq, therefore you have no actual wrapper file, it's automatic kinda :-/

The solution I think is too have a slightly different file specification in RedTrip versus Redcine, so Redcine is generating image sequences and RedTrip is referencing GlueTools quicktimes.

Haven't done it. You're a RedTripJedi, if you do.

Yes, when I select input filename (essentially #F#S + my addendum) it creates a separate file for each clip. So you suggest doing "EVENT#Z/#F#S.E"? If so, does it matter where I render them out to? Or I just need to direct them there via the "where were your files output to?" field? This isn't the complicated project yet. As soon as I can figure out how to get this simple one to work, then I'll send the complicated one through it. Thanks for your help. Here are my files.

Whatever \(space) convention you are using is not working. Just get rid of the spaces in your filenames.

are you sure you loadead .r3d files into fcp?
then you used redtrip to create a redcine xml?

i guess you set your timeline to redcode and edited away.

Yeah sorry for the misunderstanding, you guessed it rigtht, I've set the timeline to redcode and edited the qt proxy.
I've just followed one of the workflow proposed by Ian, and it works like a charm. But now I am interested in DPX and tiff export out of redcine, not mov.

ciao,
antoine.

Ian,

Okay, I rendered tiffs (FCP doesn't support DXP) out of Redcine and made an FCP timeline with them. I have attached the XML from that sequence.

From looking at the XML it doesn't look like this will be very useful. FCP doesn't support images sequences and just puts every frame as a new still image.

I guess I need to look at Glue Tools.

Like I said, we could set your XML to just reference the first frame of the Tiff sequence, and then just go straight to Autoduck. But it may not work.
Before you try messing with RedTrip, we need to figure out the second part of your workflow.

Hey Ian,

I'm doing some testing right now, and redtrip works great, I got it to render out the roundtrip xml. But when I try to import that xml into fcp, it asks me "Please choose a translation document file." What should the "translation document file" be?

Thanks for working on this!

Must be the wrong file. Upload the file you are importing into FCP.

Ian

Hi Ian,

Here's the file I'm trying to import back into FCP. Please change the log to xml. Please let me know what I may be doing wrong.

Thanks, this solution is awesome so far.

Mr. Stone,
The file you have sent me is formatted for Redcine.
Droplet Step 2 takes a Redcine Xml and uses it to modify the original FCP XML that you created. The final cut pro XML filename is the first question in the second droplet.

Lots of luck,

Ian

Thanks Ian, I figured out that I was confusing my FCP and Redcine xml files, as you said. Now I believe I am following the procedure right, but I'm still getting stuck at the step 2 stage. I can't output a roundtrip file from the redcine xml...

Here's the error I'm getting: ValueError: invalid literal for int() with base 10: ''

I've kind of given up... but hopefully your new app will be out soon, and I'm sure it works flawlessly.

Thanks,
Koa

Yeah I'm sorry, I can't keep up with RedTrip unfortunately and build something else at the same time. I had to leave it at working for some people, but not a good solution overall.

As far as flawlessly goes... all software has bugs my friend. ALL SOFTWARE.

Well best of luck my friend, and we'll all be waiting for your app. I'm sure it'll be good.

Best,
Koa
