  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDSPACE vs REDlog or PDlog

REDSPACE for Offline & WYSIWYG?

REDSPACE for Offline & WYSIWYG?

So, what is better? I read a lot from read team that it is always better to use redspace, but what I see in practice is that redspace is very good if just to get the normal look, but if you need to make more adjustments, I find it is better to just do some corrections in REDlog and output it as dpx files and then do secondary correction to it. While with redspace it seems that you are more limited. Redspace looks better right away, but seems like a bit less details at the end. so help me here, am I wrong ?

REDSPACE is better for Onset look and for offline dailies with better color information and looks great where as REDLOG have more information in Logarithmic color space better for DI.

REDSPACE is a pure WYSIWYG for onset look.

hey, I am 12 hours away from US, and I went to sleep and woke up to see so many answers. thanks a lot. but let me ask one more thing. So with build16 if we do not use redspace are we still taking advantage of all benefits build16 has to offer? to restate that question, if I we compare build 15 and build 16 and output from both to redlog will build16 still be as advanced compared to build 15 in picture quility, noise and etc?

It would be great if REDcine would develope into a full color grading software, so that istead of just controlling raw data, we could finilise secondaries and output the final look from there. Because now, i find it that to get the look I want, I need to go to output dpx in log, so that in other software like AE, color, lustre I do grading, well it is more filmlike workflow but stilll red is about making it easier and more convenient.

I'd love a white paper.

Linear = 0 - 4095 in a linear sequence.
REDlog = 0- 1024 in a logarithmic sequence. I have a value transfer sheet for REDlog.
REC709 = a standard color space... shouldn't be hard to find a proper white paper on it.
REDspace = ???
PDlog = ???
Camera RGB = ???

I'd love an excel sheet with 0-4095 linear in the left column and every other color space RED supports in columns to the right.

Also here no real answer - yet.
Thats a pity - whenever it comes to the conversion tables it gets quiet.

Sorry, I'm a newbie in working with Red and I'd want some explanation..
do "space", "log" and others affect the output or are them only a way-to-see the what comes from the camera?
because we're talking about grading, and correcting after a "space" has been setted, so I assume the space render something to the overall image..
is it right or I misunderstood?
