They should open a store in Chicago. They have one in Cali (west coast), New York (East Coast), Miami (South Coast as i'd call it), so how about Chicago (Midwest)? I feel like it could work.. thoughts?

bump. nobody has any comment on this idea? wouldn't a red store in the midwest be great?! i cant believe midwestern red users are not talking..

Mike,

I think people are afraid that if Red does that, it would mean people buying in the area would have to start paying taxes on their gear (not that all taxes are bad, but every penny counts for some indie guys)...a physical store is good for convenience, not so good for the wallet...

Mike,

The Midwest region is important to RED and it's one of the many reasons we believe the Abel and RED relationship will be great as they have a strong presence in Chicago and it will only get stronger. There are a lot of variables that come into play when deciding to open up retail showrooms.

What about international stores MichaelK?

International customers have to pay a substantial premium on fluctuating exchange, shipping, duties, taxes, customs rigamarole/delays, etc... Paying to get the camera is one thing, but the sending back and forth really kills my buzz... For example, my Scarlet's internal clock battery doesn't hold (which has actually happened to a large number of owner-ops I know), but it's crazy to spend the hundreds of dollars needed (2/3rds of which is for shipping/duties/bs) for what is literally a $1 watch-battery swap. I did the math last year (*before* the exchange rate got bad) and even then it was cheaper for me to buy a TC box instead (which is needed/supplied on any large production anyway).

i understand the sales tax and i forgot that RED partnered with Abel. Oakbrook, Illinois is not that far away and i remember visiting the (tiny) chicago office when they first opened a few years ago. Made friends with Greggor Jones who now works for Panasonic i believe.

Well since Abel has the Mid-North part of America covered Red should come to Dallas.

Also, I like the pontoon retail in international waters idea.. +1 for that. :)
