  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDs new "Juggernaut 32k" brain?

Well, don't shortchange 4K...if you are gonna quote the 16x9 ratio pixel specs for 1080P @ 2MP, then 4K is really more like 9.5MP.

Sounds more impressive too! :wink5:

Are you sure? The shorthand math makes 4K less than 8mpx, I believe.

4K 16:9 is 4096 * 2304 = 9437184 pixels. That's 9.4MP So not sure which "shorthand math" you're referring to...?

This is exactly how all DSLRs and digital cameras figure megapixels, just straight-up recorded pixels, regardless of whether they're Bayer CFA CMOS, Foveon or other. In fact, some of them quote megapixel numbers for the entire sensor and not the actual recorded area.

He may be referring to consumer 4kHD as in 3840x2160. But you are right even that would come in at 8.3mp.

Thank you Jeff Kilgroe .. your explanation sure blows me away , everything RED is just incredible ..I work in the industry in Cape Town SA, most film crew still just dont get it , its all moving to fast for them all .. im proud to say I was one of the first DOPs to use an EPIC-M in this part of the world and enjoy DITTING for international DOPs as they pass thro here ...9K , 32k what ever bring it on ., the world is still getting used to 5k then again why wait for the world to get used to it . the revolution waits for no-one : }

Ah yes, this is what I meant.

But was wrong about Math done in head.

It's much easier to explain to a common consumer, when one doesn't get too caught up in decimals, I've found.

RED previously announced the EPIC 645 and 617 format cameras.

Indeed Jeff. I have been wondering laely whether the 645 is still something that RED plans on producing. Anybody from RED want to chime in? (yes, I do realize that RED has stopped making pre-announcements - but since this was already announced....)

A digital IMAX substitute is very intriguing. Thanks
