Red has always had a great marketing strategy...just look at the Scarlet and the Red.

But what exactly will they do in '09?

My speculation is in Jan. or Feb. they will ship the Scarlet. Everybody will be shooting 3K, love it, and by NAB, will have more money for the RED RAY System.

That is where RED RAY, and it's revolutionary codec will steal the show again for the 3rd year in a row.

To top the whole show off, everybody will just LOVE the new FCS3 which will offer the ability to use R3D files natively in Color.

What do you think?

Also, do you think the reason why Red has been working the next mile on the Red One's CF Cards, and build 16, is so they can devote more of their time to the "Early '09" products?

i think Scarlet and EPIC will have a working demo at NAB. I think both will start shipping in June/09. I think Scarlet will sell like absolute hotcakes. I am guessing they will sell 20,000 Scarlets in year one. I think they will sell 1,000 EPICS in year one.

I think that Final Cut Studio 3 and the integration with .r3d files will be mind blowing.

I am not sure what I think RED Ray will end up doing.

I also think next year's NAB is the year that at least SOME answers to all RED's amazing products/price points will come from other industry heavyweights. I would expect 2K or 4K cameras from Sony and Panasonic at NAB'09.

I would then expect RED to release new things that my pee brain can't even fathom at this point, that will make the Sony and Panasonic booths more boring than ever....

Oh yeah, and I think around NAB next year America will regret their new choice of President, and collectively wish they had of voted Graham Natress in. Wait....he's Canadian. Jim for president '08.

not to hi-jack or anything.. but I will just to say this..

sony/panasonic/canon will not match the price points...
they may develop 2k, 3k, or 4k camera but in sony's case..it will most likely go to panavision for rental only.

i thought fcs3 would be more like the usual april release.

i thought u were talking jan, feb in the show, but it's not that far apart.

Hi,

I would guess 100,000 +.

Stephen

I'm all for this camera but I don't expect Sony and Panasonic and the rest of them to simply fold up their tents next year. They will respond in kind. And to be honest a lot of folks have brand loyalties they aren't going to switch just like that. I loves me some RED but I *want* the other camera companies around. RED's whole reason for life is to compete. If that dries up what will drive innovation?

Though I am a RED guy now, it will be nice for Sony to actually step up, and give us something better to get...I like Red's way of doing things much better than Sony though.

I predict neither Scarlet nor Epic will be shipping by NAB 09, but there will be working prototypes in the Red booth along with footage from both to show.

They stepped up with the EX1. It's the camera to beat under $10k IMHO. RED's got a blueprint for a camera that might kick butt in a year. Or it might not. All Sony has to do is drop the price on an updated EX1 to $5k and they are competing pretty well. Bet on OEM cards that are much cheaper media than now. The workflow is already pretty good. It's going to continue to mature.

My guess is the consumer cameras that move millions of units are where these companies really make their money. They've got retail relationships and operational capability that not many will ever compete with seriously.

Plus Scarlet can get attacked from the bottom. A really nice consumer camera hooked to a Letus, Redrock etc. can make some very nice stuff.

Exactly- RED is in a different league. Aston Martin is a gorgeous car esp for James Bond- but they sell in the hundreds and make a modest profit ultimately. Ford is boring but they make billions in volume. And so it goes...

But if the Scarlet will be mass produced...?

As someone who is about to purchase FCS 2 I'm wondering if you think FCS 3 will be a software upgrade or a whole new buy/install. I'm new to Apple and not sure how they do these things.

It will be upgradeable, but I would strongly suggest to wait a little bit longer(if can). I have FCS 1, and am waiting for FCS 3. The prices for the recent Pro Apps have been slashed in half, and the same might be with FCS3.

Even if the prices, aren't slashed again, you will save $500 if you wait.

no matter how good the scarlet is, it will never compete with the ex1, that's what sony is good at, making easy to use, comfortable, easy to manage, nice slick interface, always adjusting the buttons and interface to match ur shooting and workflow, testing and always learning from there previews cameras and always upgrading, on a pro consumer level and video, nothing beats sony, even if the quality is better, people always buy the trusty sony, sony never made the best products(including all there products, ever), but it always made the most reliable ones.

Sure it will be mass-produced but in what quantities? 100s, 1,000s, 10,000s? Take a lot of orders to get up there.

And they have new builds, with a free new camera every so often???
