  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's home 4k Projector under 10k, Sony's home 4k Projector over 20k!!

Don't be too eager. No specs have been published and there have been no denials from Red that the general artifact that laser projectors have, speckeling have been solved, or that they can build or procure lasers at a cost that would make a $10K cost a reality. I suspect the cost for the commercial model will be good but high and red has made no statements about such cost. Perhaps they will sell so many commercial models that they will by economies of scale be able to procure lasers at a low enough cost to come within arms length of their $10K prediction. Showing a concept projector in a Red case does nothing to convince me that a $10K or even a $14 K full laser lit projector is in our near futures. Just my take.

I have owned the Sony for about 1 year now and really like it. I ordered a Redray to play 4K content through it. Now I need 4K content. I figure I can convert it to Redray speak witn my laptop and the Red conversion software. I have no faith in Odemax given their failure to say anything about what happened at Sundance..

So the specs in the NAB 2012 thread in the Recon-section doesn't count as early specs? And that they showed Loom in 2K 3D that people reported to be the best 3D image they have seen?
I just think it's odd that there is so little talk about the projector. Redray and all it's glory is fine, but we need to be able to view 4K and the projector is the best economical solution to that.
The Redray is useless without a screen/projector with 4K capabilities.

It's entirely possible that RED has encountered some snags in getting their laser projector on the market. It's also possible that its all ready to go and they are stuck waiting for legal/government issues to resolve. It's also possible that they just don't want to talk about it until they are ready to ship.

Based on what was being shown at CES I expect a number of 4K panels and perhaps even another "prosumer" projector to be on the street by summer, Christmas selling season at the latest. I also expect Apple to have a UHD display out this year as it would seem a natural fit for "their" popular "retina" program. Whether the general public is actually clamoring for UHD is questionable, but the CE companies need a new widget to drive sales; fortunately for us, that appears to be UHD/4K. :-)

Cheers - #19

Well, eager to hear news from Red about it all. The projector is something I'm more hyped about then Dragon or anthing else that Red announced over the years.

I'm the same way. I'm looking forward to Dragon but really I want to project my 5K images for clients, family & friends to show off this amazing camera.

Red does want to talk about a product before it is ready to ship? You have to be kidding.

My self waiting for red projector as well . i am going to setup new preview theater. under 10k can't go wrong for 4k projector......

Do you really think the projector will be offered for $10K? Do you really think a home theater model will be delivered this year? Do you think such model will ship sometime in 2014 if you answered no to a 2013 delivery. Ted said 4-6 months for a commercial projector. if you have a super computer to translate Ted speak, there is a 99.75 probability that no projectors will be forth coming this year.

Assuming we see a HT model in 2014, what price do you expect it to come out at?

For 4K is now for the entire film industry which Red dominates. Thanks Ted for that information. Congratulations. Displays are needed now. I have seen the Sony 1000ES on line for $16500. Maybe you should wait for Red for say two years and, my guess, its say $14500 price. Following the expected cost vs selling price of the Redray which I am confident will start shipping by the end of this month and certainly by Spring.

I like Red. I think they don't understand the consumer market at all. The film market and those on extreme budgets who want to be in that market, love Red as a financial savior. As a consumer, if they offer a product and show me pictures of it rolling off an assembly line and tease me about content with announcements from their PARTNER, they called Odemax their PARTNER, at Sundance and then there are none, consumers like me aren't happy campers. Many here just say, a $10k 4K projector, thank you Red, its all I can afford, ps I really can't afford that either, and I will wait. $16,500 for the Sony and its available now. Tthink how much money you could make showing your 4K content to clients on it, right now. Naw. just wait.

So what is Red showing and saying at this week's NAB Show about their laser projector, Redray player and third party 4K download services? I haven't seen any press releases from Red posted on the NAB Show web site and the only talk from the show so far is about the 6K cameras.

Red has a big Odemax sign as part of its booth. Nothing else so far.

It appears Red at NAB was silent on status/plans for a laser 4K projector. I wonder if Red has put their consumer version of the projector either on the back burner or even shelved the project. With many of the mainstream CE manufacturers coming out with 4K flat panels (prices now starting at $1500 MSRP for the 50 inch Seiki LCD/LED model and Sony 55 inch for under $5K) and probably a few new 4K projector models appearing in the $10K to $12K price range by early 2014, perhaps Red has decided to focus any projector development on the digital cinema version. This is just speculation on my part and perhaps someone from Red can tell us the real facts.

Well I was wrong about the Redray starting to ship by spring. Spring is now one third gone and still no Redray. But I am confident it will ship by the start of Summer. Really I am. At NAB, Red said the projector had been placed on a back burner. To me that means we will not see it if at all until 2015, at least not a laser lit version.

I noticed that the RED projector was conspicuously absent from NAB.
When I asked about it, they said that the project is still very much alive, but they just had not yet finished the projector.

We are placing our order on the sony4K in the next 3 months if red doesnt bring the laser solution to market. There is only so much one can postpone. Shame, I had high hopes for Red's, and I am sure it will be better than my sony one. Guess ill cross that bridge once I get there.

This is available here in Japan right now:

Sony4K_SXRD.jpg

VPL-VW1000ES (http://store.sony.com/p/VPL-VW1000ES/en/p/VPLVW1000ES)
While it is $25K in the USA - here in Japan it is only ¥ 1.441.100 and you get 10% cash back, so really only $ 13K USD...

Just saying...
