  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's home 4k Projector under 10k, Sony's home 4k Projector over 20k!!

When both are shipping then the magazine editors can review them side by side. Hard to compare a prototype in a plexi box to a shipping and independently reviewed unit. Remembering back in the day . . . seems Scarlet changed just a wee bit before shipping. Whatever RED ends up producing I'm sure it will be good but no sense guessing what that will be since everything changes.

Also, keep in mind Sony owns a studio library of film based movies which can be rescanned to 4K. There is no doubt that 4K will be the defacto standard real soon when the digital 4K content starts to flow. Funny that the content that will feed this home theater revolution initially will be classic collector films like Gone with the Wind etc. Also funny that lowly YouTube could end up being the primary delivery pipeline for 4K content.

That Sony 4K projector has been available since February already.

I hope they release or include a simple cost effective lens that does not require the additional purchase of a 50mm RPP.

or at least use an ef mount that will allow the use of some cheap still lenses.

I notice that the RED projector has a "taking" (camera) lens strapped to it.
Just as "taking" lenses were not used on enlargers - "Taking" lenses are not typically used on projectors. Is red planning on offering a lens designed for projection? Or.... what am I missing here?

If RED not spending millions on excessive ad campaigns will insure low prices, then my order for 2 is as good as placed! In addition, I'll help offset any perceived advertising "gap" by standing on my soapbox and singing its praises to all the venue owners, technical directors and operations managers I know, heck I'll even give em a demonstration!

This thread is a bit silly to me to be honest. The Sony is here as an option to purchase and install in your home theatre or small grading suite today. If it fits your needs get it and be happy. If not, wait for RED's to be released albeit RED doesn't have a great history for delivering product quickly so take your chances and don't hold your breath. Hopefully RED will deliver this year and be ready for the demand. That said, the Sony appears to be a nice option for TODAY. Plus don't be surprised if all those awesome specs don't come immediately in your RED projector ie months of waiting for firmware upgrades for 4K 3D and variable frame rate compatibility etc anyone who onwns any RED cameras knows what I'm referring to. Will it be great and at a great price? I'm sure it will. The question is how long are you willing to wait for it?

Well, you just said that, you are not sure, but I am... ;)

REDRAY Projector it is a superior product, and what it offers is also far more innovative and superior to the SOny product, which I love, but there is not a chance I'll continue to use a Sony system once the RED system is ready.

Also don't forget that I do have first hand on some things before they even hit the market, (NOT THE CASE HERE... Yet) but I know what I know, and it is sufficient to draw my opinion, I'm not stating it as a FACT, we each will choose our own system either way, I have chosen mine a little early... Or have I chosen a little early?

BTW Felix, wanted to say this in the prior reply to you, but I'll say it now... I absolutely love SINGAPORE, and will be there again soon, to see it much changed I know I'll not find my way around any more, as it has become an incredible place... ;)

Yes, Singapore is really a great place to be at the moment. When was the last time you were here? It's quite insane how quickly things change in Singapore - I've only been here 3 years and there's a massive difference already.

No offence to you, but how are you able to categorically say the RED Projector is superior? You say it's only your opinion, but you're presenting at fact, and it's just coming across as blatant RED-fanboyism rather than an informed decision.

In other words, Instant Gratification: Buy Sony now.
Long term Gratification: Wait for the RED and avoid buyers remorse.

Enough of fillling up our landfiills with obsolete junk!

No offense taken of course, and the reason I am saying that RED is a superior product, is because I have carefully analyzed each, and what one offers vs. the other, not even talking in consideration the IMAGE QUALITY factor, which I of course like to believe that the RED Laser system of projection will be also far superior in quality then the Sony, especially so been that it is a GRADING projector, but again, considering alone what REDRAY Projector offers vs. what SONY Projectors offers, makes the RED one a far superior product.

SONY's, just a projector, RED's its also a RED RAY, and its Laser, and it has a interchangeable Lens Mount and Lenses, but there is more, and we don't know all of it yet, till RED has it out for delivery.

Singapore, wow that sure brings back memories, last time I was there? He he, I was a young and restless BOY, becoming an adult in all the wrong ways, it was the year before I moved to the US, in the summer of 1988, when I was a Street Fighter, those that did it for money unfortunately, but there is much to this story that needs to remain untold, but there is a Movie in the works about this, filmed in Italy, China and of course Singapore.

I'd say the modularity alone puts the RED projector in the lead.

I agree. The fact you can take it from your home and with a few additions, convert it into a movie theater projector just isn't getting through to some people.

Home -> Theater = compromises.

Hope the'll put some magic in that equation or it will be their worst product.

I expect firts delivery to the biggest Hollywood theater the 31th of december 2012 (this year).
The rest will come in late 2013...

Sorry to be pessimistic about this their NAB show was not as expected.

If you look at the mount, it seems to be the same pl mount as for epic or scarlet. It would make perfect sense to use the existing mounts. And if that holds true you could choose whatever type of lense you like. Which is awesome in itself.

I thought Laser projectors didn't require a conventional lens as the image is sharp at any distance so it must be a laser illuminated chip.
Do you really need a lens with an iris? and would you really want to push all that coating eating light through your shooting lens
so loosing the RED Lens $7000 and the RED mount $2000 that should make the projector itself a snip at $1000
at that price I'd like to be 1st in line or am I missing something? :-)

Forum member Peter Chang has one of these Sony 4K projectors at his house and the 4K image is very nice! I applaud Sony for pushing 4K into homes!! Obviously, I am also very excited about the Red laser projector, as well as Barco's laser 4K projector!
