  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RED's biggest problem

At the end of the day, the producer looks at your showreel. It's the way it has always been and there have always been hundreds of young DOP's fresh out of college or trying to make their way up through the arduous ranks of production with their showreels in hand, and depending on the needs of the producers, which in cinema is ultimately the needs of the audience, they will or will not get hired.

I really don't see why it needs to get more complicated than that.

But I'm talking about colorists, not DoP's. RED makes little difference to DoP's.... its another film stock to use as part of the tool box.

On the flip side, RED is really not charged with developing CC tools. REDCINE X is perhapes a 1 light but that's about it. Apple, Adobe, Red Giant, & Synthetic Aperture are the ones democratizing color grading. RED is just advancing the existing technology curve in the digital capture world. RAW digital capture has been talked about for years...

Final Cut has already changed the landscape completely. Now anybody with a laptop can cut a show. Will it be as good as a veteran editor? Of course not, but it is an opportunity for new talent to get started.

RAW workflow has put color grading into the hands of everybody. I just completed a PBS special that's about 40% Red, and hiring a veteran colorist made a huge difference. So in the long run, results will be what counts. But along the way, there will be more opportunity for novices to learn the craft. Red is a logical step along the route to the democratization of technology. When I started 30 years ago, you needed $500,000 and a million dollar facility to make a TV show.

This will flood the low end market with drek, but the good stuff, and talented people, will rise to the top.

Not many illuminated manuscripts are created anymore, definitely far more than before the printing press.

just to clarify a few points: There is a major gap between illuminated texts and the portable printing press invented in the mid 1800's. Movable type became available in the mid 1400s. as is evident by the The Gutenberg Bible. These machines were expensive and owned by printing cartels (not unlike todays "movie" studios). It also coincides with the end of the dark ages where illuminated texts were mainly created by Christian monks in order to propagate the Catholic faith of which also was the basis of law as was evident in the various heretic trials of that time such as Joan of Arc, The Knights Templars, The Cathars, scientists and anyone going against the "word".

The rotary press allowed minors such as women (bronte sisters etc..) and others (oscar wilde, joseph Conrad, Charles Dickens etc...) to get a voice to a large population by giving a cost effective way to mass produce texts and therefore finding niche markets now no longer dominated by the cartels.

Generaly a movement to what we know now as enlightment.

It also produced the newspaper and pulp fiction- so there's some crap that will flow and unfortunately people will buy it but hey the red will be used for porn as well.

I think this is the time we will start to see the Charles Dickens' of cinema rise to the top and they wont be using Arris -and hopefully they won't be losing sleep over color grading.

There is a direct causal connection between the printing press and the end of aristocratic rule. The ideas that spawned the American, French, and all the revolutions that followed were propagated to a middle class that had been created by the printing press.

Electronic communication has taken that to the next level of democratization, and the internet is the next step. And digital content creation and distribution puts it all in the reach of everyone.

Now we have to figure out how to get paid since everyone will be able to access everything immediately for free. The music industry is still trying to work that out. Now TV and movies face the same challenge. This is not Red's fault. It is inexorable, and if you don't keep up, you will be left far behind.

Freedom is a gift 1000 times more valuable than money. Everyone should still be able to feed themselves and have a roof over their head. Just the Cartels and their whores won't be able to hoard as much. But i might have to check my I-TV on that one... ;)
