Although I'm an enthusiastic believer in RED, I'm not going to need the three cameras I have on order -- 1520, 1521, and 1522.

If you'd like them, please let me know. My thinking is that you would tell me the accessories you would like with the cameras and I would pass that along to RED, along with a new mailing address (yours).

At the proper time you would wire the money for the cameras to RED. After receiving the cameras, you might also want to send RED an additional $500 per camera to switch the name to yours -- I think you'd then have a three month warranty from RED. Normally you'd have to ship the cameras back to RED for evaluation before they'd give you the warranty, but if you immediately contacted them after receipt of your brand new cameras, I doubt they'd require that you send them back.

I'm looking to receive the amount of my deposit ($1,750 per camera which will be credited towards your camera purchase) plus a premium.

Please let me know what premium you're offering by e-mailing Tim(at)SoutheasternStudios.com.

Thanks!

in the next 2 and a half months over 800 reds will go out...i think the time for paying premiums is over...but i wish you luck.

----ah you are the guy who needs 1080p for the studio...

I could see using one of those reds to shoot your informercials.
What cameras are you using in your studio?

I need 1080 HD-SDI outputs -- when I reserved the cameras 1080 HD-SDI outputs were part of RED's plan -- to run through my live greenscreen compositing machine (Orad), Ultimatte, and switcher. I'm going with three Panasonic HPX3000 cameras.

I'd like a RED at some point, but the switch to Panasonic has eaten up my camera budget and then some.

I would have prefer you continuing the battle for hdsdi1080.
Wish you good luck for the sale and hope to see you soon back on the Red bandwagon

That's unfortunate Tim. I know you were very excited about integrating the REDs into your studio there. I hear the HPX3000 is a great camera, so I'm sure it will work out fine.

Best of luck and stay in touch when you can.

I'm not sure you're right about that. My guess is that the line runs two or three months behind me -- maybe more -- and if you want to cut that line you'll have to pay a premium. Otherwise, reservation owners will just get their deposits back from the company.

Thanks Paolo. When I was on my crusade for 1080 HD-SDI, I received a surprising number of responses along the lines of "What? 1080 HD-SDI Outputs? We don't need no stinkin' outputs -- we're filmmakers! If you want lowly 1080 HD-SDI outputs buy a video camera!"

So that's exactly what I've had to do.

And I really was on the bandwagon. As Steve Sherrick will confirm, I was the very first in line at NAB 2007, lining up hours before it opened, and then running top speed to the RED booth so I could be the first to order. In fact, I got to the RED booth so early that they weren't set up to take orders yet! I was in the first group, though, to see Crossing the Line. And I reached "Senior Member" status on this forum, so I hope you'll let me hang around!

Thanks Steve. I was just mentioning you in a response when your post came through!

Hi Tim,
Not trying to stomp on the parade here, but it sounds like your selling the reservations. I'm sure you can't do this, as per Red protocol. You physically have to purchase the camera with wire transfer. Otherwise it's a no go. Then the new buyer has to send the camera to Red for the 500 eval fee and 90 day warranty. And they HAVE to.
Red has said this repeatedly.

So I'm not sure its wise to do this the way you're doing it. You're basically writing Red policy for them, and that's going to bite you in the ass, because this has come up before, and they've set pretty stringent guidelines on how these camera transfers go down. It doesn't sound like you want to do the one year rent to own thing to allow the new owners to keep their one year warranties, so you really should revise your ad to clarify how these sales are going to happen. You'll end up with some pretty upset buyers, and lots of extra and frustrating communication.

Good luck with it.
Cheers

The 3000 is a great camera and you will be very happy with it. It has been something I have been kicking around as well. Much of my work will require 1080 and I've had to think long and hard about continuing my purchase of the RED over getting the 3000. In the end I've decided to go with the RED because I have a couple clients who have committed to it. But I will still have to end up renting cameras for some of the other clients to provide what they need. The RED will not supply everything I had initially thought it would. Even though I'll have the RED, I'm still envious. I also think we will see others bailing out because of this issue. Good luck Tim and enjoy those 3000's.

Thanks Evolve. I'll look into it. RED would receive the wire transfer for the cameras that are in my name. I'm not sure why it makes any difference where the wire comes from. If you're financing a camera through a leasing company, a bank, or your business savvy rich uncle, the wire will come from them, not you. Does RED have a problem with that? If so, I guess the buyer could wire the funds to me and then I'd wire them to RED.

As for the $500/ 3 month warranty issue, that was mentioned in my original post. I guess the buyer could immediately ship the unopened camera back to RED for evaluation, but I can't imagine why RED would want that. It's less work for RED to just accept the $500 fee and transfer the name without going through the busy work of opening the unopened box, checking it, re-packing it, and shipping it back.

But I'm sure all these issues would be set in stone before anyone sends me any money.

I think that's exactly how it has to go down. Wired and then re-wired. I'm not sure either, but that's the way it is. Although on the financing through leasing thing, I'm not sure how it happens.
I imagine in general that this way of doing things as far as reservations changing hands keeps things logistically clearer for Red. One reservation one name kinda thing.

I agree with the shipping reshipping bit. They have their reasons. When you're dealing with thousands of cameras, I'm sure that you want to only have one pipeline for warranty stuff, one pipeline for sales, etc. etc. I'm sure to Red it's the least complicated, although seemingly to us more difficult, way of doing things at this point.
I just posted to mentioned that stuff so that you're not caught unawares of how Red wants it to happen.
Cheers and good luck.

Absolutely, so if nobody wants them, that's exactly what I'll do.

It's good to have that as an option, although I would think there are people interested in jumping in line, even if it's only a few months sooner than if they ordered today. Either way, I wish you the best on this.

I think you deserve a premium for being a early res holder! People do this shit for living and here you are with specs that have back fired and not just flipping them to make money. GOOD LUCK!

I just linked this post to the guys that were suppose to buy my cameras, I hope they contact you right of way as they are ready to buy immediately.

Good Luck Tim.

Ciao

Hello Ketch and Abu and thanks for your support. It helps especially since I've been getting absolutely ripped over at Cinematography.com.

I've evidently "disgusted" and "offended" people from all over the world. I even generated wishes that my endevours go "tits up" from a guy in England.
You should check it out -- it's under the Cine Equipment Classifieds section.

The good news is I'm receiving offers.

Thanks again fellas!
