Could they possibly have made this more confusing?

OK tell me if I have this right:

I grade my R3D in RedAlert and save the preset which I name and it gets stored in a presets file as an .RLX file. But this file is not used in REDrushes?

When I open REDrushes and I want my REDAlert graded shots transcoded I set the look source to RSX???? (even though the look file I saved had a .RLX extension?)

Color Space and Gamma Space- select- Look Source?

in RSX settings:

RSX Souce: Selected ? or Source? Does selected mean the clip selected in RED rushes render Que? which do I choose to get my grade and my in and out points from REDAlert?

What is the Select RSX for?

And last but not least.... when I do a grade in REDAlert and save the preset does that then change the RSX file in the R3D's original file? Is that what I'm selecting in the look source and RSX settings box in REDrushes? and is this why the RLX file from REDAlert is not used in REDrushes??

Forget RLX, the RSX is in your original media folder with the R3Ds. It is created automatically so you don't need to do anything.

SELECT RSX (in RSX source) allow you to have a single RSX for all of your clips.

So if you have 20 shots in 1 set up, you can apply the same look to all, without having to tweak each one.

Otherwise use CLIP RSX for RSX source.

If you want to affect each one individually, just open each clip in REDALERT and make changes (remember curves don't come across to RR.)

The RSX is automatically created in the folder when you tweak.

I'm using it right now, works great!

Make sure you have the latest RA/RR.

Good luck!

Thanks Jim...one more:

If you already have an RSX file in the media folder does it get automatically updated (or overwritten) if you reopen it in REDAlert and do some more adjustments then save it again?

Yessir!

I've been meaning to share this with people as it's very important:

If using Clipfinder, you can first open a clip in RED Alert and make your color correction changes to it. Then, just close RED Alert. As long as you choose "RSX" in the settings, it will render the clip per the settings you used in Alert. This is a great way to set up long overnight renders with settings that are better than just your "camera look" or an overall preset.

hi! i'm new here... just want to know if i can use vegas for red... tnx!

Sure, if you first convert all your footage to a format Vegas can digest (with the help of RR or Clipfinder).

RedAlert/RedRushes

RedAlert/RedRushes

Another great way to go is to use RedAlert with Clipfinder (instead of RedRushes). Clipfinder displays your shots and tells you if you created a RSX. Clipfinder also has the same render options as RedRushes.

I had a similar problem figuring out how RedAlert related to REDRushes. I thought you could save a look in REDAlert as an RLX. Which you can. But you can't access that in REDRushes. After this confusion, Steve Beres at PlasterCity Post, gave me this quick explanation (I'm paraphrasing....)

What you need to do is load an RSX file, not a RLX file. It's confusing I know, you make an RSX by setting the look you want in RED Alert, once your happy with the look close the app and head to the holder containing the shot you worked on in RED Alert, that's where you'll find the RSX. From there I usually copy the file to a safe location and give it a name that makes sense. Now when you go into RED Rushes you can select that look.

I think that all you have to do is do your adjustments in RA and then just select CLIP RSX in RR and you'll get every shots individual settings you did in RA. No further steps involved.
