At the worst time left me ... during a transcoding on the set .....
not 'possible :(..... I need this card to transcode many clips ....
These cards often break ...

I think the best solution is Meizler or "Module Toia," in that case I had made the ProRes .....

RMA time

RR CALLBACK - DECODE FAIL - FRAME; ITEM 6200; 0X104C871B0 MODE; 'DRCR' CUSTOM SIZE 1280X675 PIXEL TYPE ...... failed to decode (corrupt frames?)

Let us know if the support are good to get it fixed. Seams to be little different with the rr than the cameras so im curios.

yes.... dead....
but how the hell do they burn at this rate ...:mad:

Luigi, sorry to hear it, that sucks.

I need a RR for my Mac Pro, stories like yours hold me back.

Ciao Will,
are just angry, also because 'the answer will be':
should be replaced and costs $ 3000.

Just to provide some balance. We have had 2 red rockets since they where released inside the same system. Running 24/7/365. Transocding on redcine-X and also as slaves for a Baselight system and we have had ZERO HICCUPS.

Granted, they are inside an air conditioned closet and they have only been pulled out ONCE form the system to be installed in a pci expansion chasis.

Just felt I should chime in since people always come online to complain and rarely ever do they do the same to give positive feedback.

Unfortunately, in this case it's not the success that will be measured as with a $4,750 purchase that success should be a given. It's the amount of failures that will be measured and they are vast and often. These cards are really disappointing to say the least. Although I still have one working card out of two its gross how many failure stories are out there and I'm sure we only hear some of them here on these boards which means there are a lot more out there.
If the RedRockets were a car manufactured by any car company in the world they would have issued a recall long ago.

Yes sure Frank but,
I had this card in the mac pro from 1.5 years.
To understand this I had 2 of redrocket, and one to be broken now.
However, if every 1.5 years, you have to spend $ 4700, I create that is not worth ....
And as if your Mac Pro broke every 2 years ...
Sure, maybe you have the chance to work in the studio and never quit, and then under air conditioning, but I think most of us have to make this work on the set.
Now I'm waiting I will break also the second card .....

Now be afraid to even use the second card .....

red rockets have low temp solder.....
if your comp gets too hot, it will melt the solder..
a simple solder bath will fix all of your "broken" red rockets
or figure out a way to re-melt the solder
(the oven trick)

Here's a Quadro 4000 graphics card - ~$750:

And here's a RED Rocket - $4.750:

You'd think RED could afford to up the quality on these a little, yeah? Even just buy high quality fans for them would be great as the stock one is simply a piss poor $5 part. I know a guy who has 2 water cooled Rocket cards in his system. I may do something similar at some point with a Corsair H60.

My Rocket was damaged in transit (a capacitor had come off). I didn't notice it until a year and a half after I bought the card - when I pulled it from my Mac because I was going on an Alexa feature where I didn't need it. Oddly, the card had worked just fine without the capacitor. Found the part in the antistatic bag and soldered it back on.

Zakaree,
What should I do?
Use a phone hot?

I have to assume that RED has some deal with DVS or whomever they purchased the cards from that is preventing them from doing anything to these cards including repairs. Everything that this card is goes against the grain of what they have modeled their company as ie a professional solution with an affordable price tag. Frankly, the Rocket is large in part to blame for the many workflow issues people are unhappy with RED and since it is the only "professional" solution for transcoding you'd like to think that protecting / housing the cards and branding them would be a priority.

+1

I've broken 3 RR's myself, refuse to have anything to do with them anymore, just use the Quadro 4000 on half-res debayer for dailies/editorial transcodes, and crush the noise out of the blacks with Resolve

Plus the Quadro accelerates the Alexa LogC/Rec709 workflow to about 60 FPS

I have no problem spending $4750 on quality gear but RR cards are too dicey at this point

Sorry Red

you agree ... too risky ..
Dell T7600 dual 8 core .. half debayer in realtime .. redrocket same ..!!

Hey Luigi,

I also feel your pain and would be incredibly frustrated if I found myself in your position.

Again for balance, I have one of the very first rockets ever delivered and have used it constantly without a problem. There are thousands out there, couldn't say if there are 2,000 or 10,000, but my guess is somewhere in the middle.

So what is an "acceptable" failure rate for a unit? 0%? 2%?

From the number of issues I've seen posted, perhaps 50-100, suggests that maybe 1%-3% of rockets fail in the first couple of years.

So I wouldn't portray it as an epidemic of poor quality.

But there is no doubt there is a legitimate argument when it comes to the lack of repair options.

Clearly Red are between a rock and a hard place in this situation.

My guess is their cost is around $3,000 and they have no way to offer repairs on dead cards.

What I do not believe is that they are making big profits on replacement rockets, it's just not their style.

Anyway, none of this helps you, and this is in no way meant to counter anything you have said. Just wanted to add some detail from my own perspective to the conversation.

Maybe try polling DIT's on their RR failure rate - for some reason that seems to be where the most failure is coming from.

Jimhare;)
I agree with you ....
but then we complain if you lose your job because a redrocket does not work, and be out already difficult to get a job.
They are the same idea Toia, between 1 or 2 years we'll forget the Redrocket. and we would have much computer performance, so I'll try not to make more use of Redrocket.
This card to be a drug, once you have used if he can not do without, it costs too much.
Or maybe a ProRes module will greatly facilitate the flow.
Even if you were to go in color with Davinci with two hours Raw of footage you would about 20 hours of rendering without Redrocket, this being an extreme case. On advertising, promotion, video clips usually not more than 5 minutes and 1 hour to render with Davinci.
So the best way to go, a nice Dell T600 dual 8-core and an object type Atomos Samurai, although I would like the Meizler by the high cost ...
Maybe I'm too angry to write .... sorry guyss
