  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDROCKET ....dead...

3.000$ or try the owen trick to re-flow it?
I suspect you'll end up cooking. You can find some DIY re-flow technics in youtube (as you know for sure), last year a friend cook a couple of old macbook pro for me, with success!!, still working.

you´re one of the last we want to have troubles, you and your amazings system configs helps tons of us, I wish you all the luck.

Vico .. thanks
tried .. nothing everything stays with decode error ...
I finished package now shipping ...
Maybe I'll have 'luck ... but I've no idea how it will end ...

red rockets have low temp solder.....
if your comp gets too hot, it will melt the solder..
a simple solder bath will fix all of your "broken" red rockets
or figure out a way to re-melt the solder
(the oven trick)

Actually, it seems the old MacBook Pros from 2008 with the graphic chip failure could sometimes be repaired with a solder reflow or the oven trick too. So I guess if there's no remedy from Red, there's nothing to lose by trying it! Just remove or protect anything that might melt!

Jimhare;)
I agree with you ....
but then we complain if you lose your job because a redrocket does not work, and be out already difficult to get a job.
They are the same idea Toia, between 1 or 2 years we'll forget the Redrocket. and we would have much computer performance, so I'll try not to make more use of Redrocket.
This card to be a drug, once you have used if he can not do without, it costs too much.
Or maybe a ProRes module will greatly facilitate the flow.
Even if you were to go in color with Davinci with two hours Raw of footage you would about 20 hours of rendering without Redrocket, this being an extreme case. On advertising, promotion, video clips usually not more than 5 minutes and 1 hour to render with Davinci.
So the best way to go, a nice Dell T600 dual 8-core and an object type Atomos Samurai, although I would like the Meizler by the high cost ...
Maybe I'm too angry to write .... sorry guyss

I'm sorry Luigi for losing your RR. I know my post will not help you, but for the life of me, I can't understand why Resolve can't help with the debayering problem. Yes, Resolve! Let me explain.
My hero grading platform is FilmMaster. When I'm using it with Red RAW, it simply debayers R3D in the background to an intermediate codec. In case of FilmMaster it's DPX. Same can be done with Smoke and there, you can even choose the intermediate codec, like Prores. So, when I use FilmMaster with R3D I don't need RR. I just conform the timeline first and let FilmMaster do it's thing in the background, overnight, if needed. Then I just grade debayered DPX at full resolution in real time, no RR. Obviously, it's not perfect nor it's universal, but it would be very helpful solution for working without RR in a pinch. So, why can't Resolve do this?

hate to add the misery but my card went down in the middle of a job and my only option was buy another or possibly lose future jobs with the client and red. not much fun

Here in Santiago, Chile, our two RR's dead, we had money to "repair" only one... And our friend Pablo got his dead too, and they were the only 3 cards in Chile, so here we had a 100% failure rate. Received the $3000 replacement and we're scared even to open RC-X!!!

Someone should open a pole to see how many Redrocket failures are out there. If we huff and puff enough maybe some of these complaints will finally be taken into account. I would but I don't know quite how to do it :) Or, if someone just wants to tell me how to do it, i'd be happy to open the thread.

+1

I've broken 3 RR's myself, refuse to have anything to do with them anymore, just use the Quadro 4000 on half-res debayer for dailies/editorial transcodes, and crush the noise out of the blacks with Resolve

Plus the Quadro accelerates the Alexa LogC/Rec709 workflow to about 60 FPS

I have no problem spending $4750 on quality gear but RR cards are too dicey at this point

Sorry Red

Yep. Every other company has opened its RAW workflow up to the GPU. Sony is very similar (RED might think to similar) and it cuts like butter on even the most lightly modified GPU system. Proprietary workflows that require specific cards are not a way forward.

Also dumping 5 grand into a Pcie 2.0 card when 3.0 is the standard on higher-end PC's, and the new MacPro's will (hopefully) be using it, seems like utter and consummate folly

Absolutely agree with this. My guess is that RED anticipated high end CPUs would have cracked the real time barrier by now and saw the Rocket as a stopgap measure. FWIW I'd rather spend 5 grand on blazing fast CPUs that will make everything faster, not just R3D workflows. Hopefully that day is close, and as noted above, it will be a PCI-e 3.0 world soon as the throughput needed for "big data" is dependent on the weakest link.

The other answer is for RED to support GPU decodes on nVidia/AMD/Intel. The downside is that GPU processing of image data typically has less precision than CPU decodes. It is my hope that RED is pursuing a solution using hybrid processors that will be revealed at NAB - but that's pure conjecture.

I wouldn't hold your breath on this, Jarred already stated that a super rocket was coming down the pipe so they are obviously dedicated to the proprietary hardware accelerator card post workflow, (at least until Jim/Jarred change their minds which they tend to do often enough). Although i agree with everything you mention above about PCI-e 3 and faster processors being the way to go I would settle for a better warranty on the current solution that doesn't appear to be going anywhere anytime soon, ie RED ARMOR 2 & 3 year warranty periods. Some kind of assurance that when you purchase this pricey hardware that you can count on it for X amount of time. For DIT's especially this is a huge concern, being on a job and your Rocket works one day and the next its dead, and your in Wyoming out in remote territory for another 2 -3 days for example. No one to get you a loaner card and production expects to walk away with their transcodes at the end of the gig which would have been the case no problem had the Rocket not taken a shit on you.
Anyhow, i think I've made my point numerous times about this issue as have many others. RED, fix it already!

That would be nice, but unfortunately bet its more a dream than anything.

Just saw this may be launching at NAB - http://nofilmschool.com/2013/03/convergent-design-odyssey7-oled-monitor-external-recorder

4K raw recording + a monitor for 3-5K-ish. Probably more involved, but with these types of products coming fast and furious I see very little need for expensive, proprietary media, and likewise, the cards to manage said data.

I'd love to see RED make some real inroads by offering solutions that are more ubiquitous. The camera is unique, it can stand on its own, why keep it isolated with all this stuff. Production will take the path of least resistance. Producers, by and large, don't waste their brainpower on color theory or redcodes. They want easy, they want cheap, and they want great looking.

If a 4K workflow is to be championed it needs to be as fluid and (arguably) as inexpensive as the current HD offerings. Maybe it wasnt possible a couple years ago, but it is now.

In Norway, if you buy a thing "which is supposed to last", you have 5 years protection. That is if you buy it as a private person, not as a business.

I guess these kind of local laws are part of the reason for RED to sell and distribute things themselves. :)

Never had any (unexpectable) issues with anything but the rocket, though...

If I was building a desktop I would probably spend the $5k on brute horsepower in lieu of a Rocket but the mobile enclosures sure are nice for when you need a transportable solution.

True that. Still, without a jam up warrantee (3 years free swap anyone?), the inherent risk of buying Red Rockets at this point is too great for my business model. As others have noted, it seems likely that RED has cost issues that prevent them from offering greater warrantee protection terms. Still frustrating as the OP noted, but at the end of the day its just rational business practice - hard to fault any company for that, especially one that has given us tremendous value for the dollar on so many occasions.

Jake,
what you say it 's true, in my home and in the office I always use Resolve, never use REDCINE-x, I find it useless knowing how to use Resolve. Resolve and 'much faster and I can do much more, including Lut;)
I usually use Premiere 6 and then Resolve without Redrocket card.
My Hp 800 hack works fine in 1/2 debayer, then debayer full force. in delivery;)
The problem is that I can take with me the tower in some set, then use the mobile solution, while fast is never like the tower and then use the Redrocket for transcoding, obviously not having the time I have no other solutions.

Now wait and see what the Nab REd exits the magic hat ...
I'm sure that if you were to make a ProRes module, a new fan and the new Dragon for our Epic would be a fantastic gift, and the workflow even more easy to manage.

It would be nice to know if RR is failing more on Mac or in PC. Lion has been having lot of trouble, in my case the RR can be seen in some platforms and not in others, in macbookpro with Magma it disapeared for ever after working perfectly, but in Towel it was still there.
