  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedRocket and 'partners' ...

RR already does that.. it has HD-SDI outputs that play out 1080 in realtime. There is also a breakout box coming in the next month that will give you a whole whack load of additional rack mountable connections.

a couple limitations that should be addressed fairly soon are PsF and audio over HD-SDI. The realtime down convert of the 4k works very well, and the images are wonderful, but without a couple features, it's usefulness is limited.

Here is a list from my point of view that would increase the usefulness of the Rocket Card.

1. Audio over HD-SDI
2. support of PsF frame rates.
3. ability to layback multiple clips (like in REDCINE-X) and playback a timeline to HDCAM-SR. This would be great to create an HDCAM-SR master tapes (for those clients that want a tape)
4. The ability for REDLINE to support REDROCKET. This in itself would deal with the majority of the current limitations.
5. Timecode burn for offline file creation.

Currently we use the Rocket Card exclusively for output of Quicktimes. The other use is to sit with clients and do one-light and best-light color grading.

There are many other things that I can think of that "would be nice" but this would be a good starting point.

***EDIT*** the addition of the recent ProRES codecs would be nice too...

cheers
Colin

This may be premature, but how will the Red Rocket work with Epic and Scarlet footage? Will it be able to transcode 5k footage in real time or close to?

I'd like to know that. 42MB vs. 225MB. There's some huge difference, and I definitely don't want to work with something like "1/4 high". I'm hoping just a second RR will solve it.

However, before we worry about Epic and Scarlet, please give RR some love. I don't use it unless I output to image sequences. For QT, it's faster for me to run Clipfinder on two Mac Pros with better scaling options plus much more. Sad but hopeful ;)

01. Does RR support Red Rushes or does CineX do batching???

02. My application is primarily to process clips to prores

03. What else are you guys doing with it???

Good question I would like to know if RR will support Redline as at this stage I will use it mostly for Prores compression. Will it accelerate Redrushes?

Also another good question will the currant version of Redrocket be able to compress and real time play back 5K and hire?
Will RC100 up to RC225 need a hard ware update or firmware update from the currant Redrocket?

Thanks.

Rushes relies on Redline to work, much the same as Monkey Extract, Clip Finder etc. Currently RedRocket does not offer any acceleration of Redline

when I can Qmaster a farm of older Mac Pros all with RR cards, that will be a very cool day.

any new info RED, waiting patiently for these updates you keep talking about.

YAY! B/O box next month! :drool5: Thanks Jarred.

Also expect Quantel to support RR soon/

RR for on set dailies... they should be called "minuties"... definitely redefines the meaning of "RUSHES" and our D.I.T Daniel Browning was in RR HEAVEN this past saturday on Shawn Nelson's shoot "Descensus".

I'm biased of course because I was lucky enough to be a SWAT member whose "neck was broke" by his 16 y/o sister with a 20 foot wire gag on to my shoulders right before she almost twists my head off :)

some Canon stills from the shoot: (i'll trust Shawn will post screen grabs soon)

er Shawn? little help here please! I was just talent!

Seriously most fun I've ever had, we had 3 RED's all shooting Build 21 Redcode 42 2:33 to 1 and RPP's and the RR made checking footy so fast and smooth.

THANKS RED!

WE Will definitely invite you guys to the feature. Believe it or not, this was just for a test/promo shoot to show off Build 21. Shawn pulled together an amazing crew in less than two weeks including "Book of Eli" FX master William "Billy" Boggs among other Oregon RED fanatics.

Im seriously bummed.. We like that kinda stuff..

Hey Jarred, meet me in Zurich just after Christmas, we have 3 Swiss Tanks that are going to roll up to a bank, and blow a hole in the front entrance. We are shooting all the vfx elements on RED. Going to be a blast.

Hey Jarred, I gave Jim a heads up and he told me to have fun...I did :-)

Its my biggest project yet. I wrote, directed and co-produced. Tim Whitcomb provided the facilities, Bcam Red, talent and his awesome RED Rocket™™ suite.

It was 3 Red shoot using my RPPs.

We shot: magic hour rooftop rappelling, 13-member SWAT maneuvers, full auto machine gun blanks, air ratchet stunts, wire work choreography, 12 person fight melee, squibs, flares, sparks and a dead hooker.

So as you can probably guess, the great stuff hasnt even been posted yet, haha

At which point the vault proves to be empty, save for this on the wall.

It was a fun shoot - very epic, and the footage came out great! I really liked being able to go down to the DIT station and watch what we had shot in real time during breaks. I was impressed with how well and quickly the RR worked. Instant dailies are awesome!

Ryan rocked the shoot as DP extraordinare and provider of Bcam. Between his Red, Tim's Red and mine and everything going down, it was incredible.

Thanks for the kind words of support. :) It was very impressive team of people Shawn was able to pull together, in addition to writing and directing the short. :)

And just to clarify "everything going down" is in reference to the events of the shoot, not the equipment. All three Red's, RPP's, and the RR all worked flawlessly!

Daggum Jarred, it would have been great to have you. From what I hear the RR performed flawlessly and both Shawn, Tim, and Ryan are right, it was a privilege to work on the project. Shawn did an amazing job of pulling it all together and everyone stuck through to the end.

You can say that again. The RR was a fantastic asset to have right on set.
