Working on a super slim budget. Would the mattebox from Redrock Micro work well enough for low budget indie projects? I'd LOVE a pro $2k plus mattebox but right now it's just not in the budget. I'm trying to stay under 1k if possible. Any other alternatives you'd suggest checking out? I would like a swing away with at least two 4x5.65 trays.

I have one. Hasn't been used very much as I later bought a RED carbon fiber MB which is what I use fairly regular. RR Micro works well but I'd say it is a bit bulky. Medium good quality; no complaints there whatsoever. Seems reasonably robust. The swing away feature is nice.

What about the Wooden Camera Universal Matte box? I'm getting the $990 version. It's a really smart design. You can go from a full blown matte box down to a single filter trey for gimbals. Super slick. Here's the video. Plus, everything WC makes is quality.

If your budget is really tight, buy a used Redrock Micro mattebox. We've had ours for yours and it works perfectly, with no issues at all. And you can buy them for $300 on Ebay.

In fact, we'll be listing one of ours (we are moving from two cameras to one) on Ebay next week.

Wow, the Redrock is really cheap, especially with a Swing Away arm.

But man, I love how the Wooden Camera can be reduced into 1 tiny filter trey. WC is so clever with all their stuff. High end gear at mid-range prices.

I've had a Redrock since my Red One. It gets the job done. Not rental quality gear, and I'd MUCH rather have a Bright Tangerine, but I decided to only spend money when it gives me a new capability and better build quality/lower weight doesn't meet that criteria.

Oh trust me - I love the guys at WC plus they're local. Ryan is really cool people. I've been by the shop quite a few times and he showed me the mattebox setup when it was still being polished for NAB (last year I think). If I could swing the 2K for the full kit I would in a heartbeat. It's my first choice for sure.... I have about $8-900 I can drop at the moment so was trying to work with that until I'm good and can pick up the WC one.

I too have a Red Rock Micro Mattebox that I recently purchased. However, I noticed that it requires some sort of extension to fit the proper height of the lens using a DSMC1 body. For those that have the Red Rock, did you run into this? Do any of you have pictures of your rig setups? Dont mean to hijack, just figured that maybe someone interested in this mattebox might be curious about this as well or if it is just me. Thanks all.

Would you mind mentioning on what camera are you working? I've used the redrock mattebox on one shoot where we got stuck without a mattebox and without the option to rent ARRI etc, apart from the fact that is a bit plasticky it worked okay, the main issue from what I remember that on super35 size sensor or about that size (EPIC MX@5K 2:1) it doesn't let you go wider then 20mm lens or so, and that's the tradeoff with most cheaper mattebox, the more expensive ones you can go up to 14mm. now, I might be wrong about this, but I did check RR website and this is what they're saying as well.

Another budget to option to the WC which someone I really trust said is very high quality relative to price is the Movecam mattebox which goes to 14mm: http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/839017-REG/Movcam_MOV_301_0201_MM1_Matte_Box.html

You could buy the WC Base kit for Universal Matte box which is what I'm doing. It's at $995 which is just slightly above your limit. It does not have a swing away arm so you have to slide matte box when doing lens changes, but that's how the Arri MMB is and that's quite popular. I feel ya on the price, but at least this way you can just upgrade as opposed to going through the hassle of selling then buying a new one. Here's the link to the $995 base kit

The Redrock does seem pretty great for the price though and would be my first choice in that price range.

I have the RED CF Matte Box that I bought used. I have seen them for as little as 7-800 bucks on REDUSER and on eBay. However I also have the super cheap Camtree swing away model that works with 4x4 filters and has two stages, one of which rotates. It isn't a Bright Tangerine...but it works and it is only $245.
