Hi just wondering if anyone had used a RedrockMicro Mattebox and follow focus with the Epic? Ultimately I will get a Red Mattebox but budget dictates with all the other accessories I am getting that I use the RR one initially. Also not exactly sure what I would need... but Im thinking DSMC 15mm ADAPTOR plus the DSMC QUICK RELEASE PLATFORM PACK should do the trick? Risers etc? Any experience here would be helpful. Also rod size recommendations with this setup on the Epic would be helpful. Thanksin advance

I like the RR Follow Focus. Have you used their Mattebox? I was about to get one but saw one in person. It's kinda big and clunky. I mean it seems to work well, but I'm much happier with my Chrosziel.

We have 3, I have not put one on our M. We added MB20 rear bellows and custom swing away arms. They need constant maintenance due to poor build quality, but you get what you pay for. I would save up and get yourself an Arri, especially for something like an EPIC.

...Or get a simpler, but much more solidly built mattebox for about the same price: Oconnor O-Box, Red Pro Mattebox, or Arri LMB-5.

The Redrock has "all the features", but mine started falling apart after a year's use.

I use LMB-5 and MMB-1. Both are great. And for bigger needs MB-28.

I have not used o-box or RED yet. But both look good.

+1

An MMB-1 or OConnor kit will cost you 2 to 3 times as much, but it's well worth it. I was on my third RedRock Mattebox in less than a year. In fact, that third one (second replacement) arrived and I didn't even put it to use, just sold it. It's not even a durability issue with the RedRock in most regards, but the way the stages rotate is poorly designed and guaranteed to fail. The release for the swing-away isn't good for very many cycles and the tolerances are so sloppy with the flags and how they attach, they usually end up just falling off.

I commend RedRock for making a usable product at a great entry-level price. But those low prices come with a compromise and the stuff just doesn't hold up. Even when you're like me and are meticulous at maintaining your gear.

The RED MB is great... But it's usability is restricted until we get more bits and pieces to go with it.

We use a Cinevate mattebox and hundreds of shooting days later it's still perfect.
