  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

redrock mattebox

I was there and I have to say, the new/re design RR MB is a significant improvement from they one the had on display at NAB.

It has the best "bang for the buck" vibe..... that I've seen in a MB.... So far.

But, I think Curt is cooking up something extra special.

Sorry I didn't get to meet more Redusers though.

Brian's quite the Spartan, I think we may need to triple team him in order to get 'em down!

BTW, is anyone attending the lighting workshop at Mole Richardson today?

No, would love to be there but very busy :( next year I am there though.

Okay, next event near LA, we'll all coordinate.

Thanks for chiming in here Brian, sounds like the MB is coming along a treat. I look forward to the pics and complete specs sometime in the future.

It's always good when manufacturers take the time out to discuss their products so openly. Really appreciate it.

For those of us who are anxious to see the RRMB prototype, someone posted the following images on the RedRockmicro forum. They're pics from Cinegear, the last of which is of the MB prototype w/swingaway. It looks mighty good to me. Enjoy:biggrin:

Thanks for that, the mattebox is looking nice. Can't wait for more images. For $500 it's looking like one hell of a bargain compaired to similar models.

i looked at the new prototype MB and thought it is moving along very good thru development ( saw it at NAB) ...

i played with the FF and it works .. a great improvement over last years cinegear ...
for many it comes down to $$$ ... for 2500+ you can get X FF ( or MB) and for under 1000 you can get Y FF ( or MB) ... either one will do the job

i'm keeping my eye on both these products ...

Cheers Bruce, is that the only pic you got or do you have more?

I didn't want to take too many pics - Brian explained to me that since everything was prototyping material, it was all quite a bit thicker than the final material. I thought that I'd better keep it to only one photo running around the internet that gives a false impression of thickness ;) Also, being prototyping material, the texture wasn't super cool-looking.

One thing I forgot to ask is if this one will work okay with those damn Nikons that extend a little bit as they focus. It looks like there is a possibility it will. Brian?

That someone was me! Haha! It goes with the report I wrote.

Hey Bruce nice pics. The new RR matte box looks quite nice. I just finished shooting with the russian arm (the camera car pic with the porshe) yesterday. Except the one I got had the russian arm mounted on a mercedes ML55 and not the porshe. It is a great piece of equipment.

Awesome! Yes, no Porsche needed - Mercedes would be fine ;) They had one behind the Porsche. Glad to know that it is as impressive in use as it is in demonstration, Finner! You'll have to send us some pics - the coolest thing I've ever used on a vfx supervising job has been a Technocrane. Running around with that Russian arm on a car must have taken that to a whole new level of fun, you lucky chap!

Ah yes. Sad I didn't get any photos of the TechnoDolly in action (saw it last year, but this year, the power was cut near the end of the show).

Sorry, back on topic: Brian, so your system doesn't do 5.65x5.65 but does 5x6 right? So, your recommendation for a grad would be a 5x6 - hmm, which way round? Vertical or horizontal? You said the RedRock shifts vertically. For the stuff I do, I could get away with either, I think.

Cheers

yah bruce... im young, but ive been lucky enough to have amazing credit and money saved up.

Haha, yes, the money you saved in Dollars probably went further in LA than South African Rands ;) A proper Red camera package costs more than a decent-sized house back home! Hence the interest in the RedRock matte box - it's priced at a level people other than Americans and Europeans can afford. Although to be honest, in SA my friends mostly just rent. In America it seems like more of a "who's got the gear gets the jobs" thing? Also, you guys seem to have a lot of gear that you don't lend out? I am constantly amazed at the number of people with PD150s, DVX100s, etc sitting in their apartments here that are in pristine condition, practically unused. As far as I'm concerned, a video camera only has 5 years before it is totally out of date, so you might as well lend it out and get a few scratches on it - by the time it's out of date, it should be falling apart but with lots of stories to tell, haha. Plus all the guys you lent the camera to will remember you when they buy the next model. Though I can't imagine your Red sitting unused!

Anyway, I can survive on lesser toys and talent (uh, hopefully talent, I mean), but then I'm a director, not a DP. It'll be interesting to see what happens to "3rd world cinema" vs American indies with the Red. The Americans will have the advantage of tons more money, plus far greater numbers of Reds. But then the 3rd world people will have a chance at making films using rented Reds that were simply not possible to do before. It'll be interesting to see who benefits more. Probably it'll just be great for both.

Now, Red or CVB or RedRock, how about making an indie TechnoDolly?

OK, after the pic (thanks, Bruce) I'm a lot more interested. I'm still betting on Curt to come through with something wonderful, but I'm thinking for $500 the RedRock might just be that special bargain a lot of people are looking for.

At RedRock's price I can certainly imagine a great many people buying one simply as backup.

I'm glad in a way I don't get my RED for a while after the earlier reservations, because I'd like to see what people end up using for matte boxes and see if I can get away with something more like $1,000 rather than $3,000+.

Im not glad i dont get my red for while just for mattebox choice sake.. im glad im not getting it for a while because i want full feature capabilities and all the bugs fixed by the time i get mine in dec
