  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDray Projector..

To be fair - as long as there isn't a shipping product there's no competition. Btw. the poster (1st post in this thread) says "this year" - that was 2012. I'm pretty sure we'll never see this product on the market.

Obviously I'm just trying to piss off Jarred enough to prove me wrong - heh heh ;-)

Honestly, I would LOVE to see this product happen eventually. If nothing else then to prove ALL of the people I told about this product 2 years ago - wrong. Trust me, I've been ridiculed quite a bit since I came back from NAB in 2012 after having seen it in person... partially working (2K, 8 bit with some rainbow ghosting). Nevertheless, I was quite impressed by it.

Yeah Jared, I think you missed making a good joke on that one :)

Either way, I still think that they're going to release it. I imagine it's not easy to make a laser projector, and really if they scrapped the project, they would have no reason to hide it from us at this point.
IMO I'd give it a bit more time. Have a little faith in RED.

I think there's a fair chance that the projector is more or less done, but RED may be waiting for the prices on parts to come down before it makes sense financially. I suspect the $10K pricetag may have been somewhat optimistic to begin with and that might be why we are still waiting for it to come out. Also, none of the "other" guys have come out with anything in the same ballpark in terms of specs and price. In the end, only Jim and Jarred know why it hasn't shipped yet :-)

Competition?

Competitively showing off what they could be releasing...

Could we have a competitive timeline back like not this year, it before xy it z?

Thanks for replying Jarred.

PS, Jarred, also, what about 8k thunderbolt 2/dp and held frames (now supported by vesa standards)? For out four advertising and light shows.

Plenty of laser projectors out there for less than $10k. Maybe not theatre ones, or three beamers, but something.

I've been holding a spot in my living room for the projector for exactly two years now, so I wouldn't mind hearing news on it... :bigear:

Speaking as one of the ignorant unwashed masses here... but suspect alot of folks here are assuming that the technical hurdles in developing this unit are ether already overcome, or misunderstand the scope of what they involve.

I saw the laser projector when it was demo'd at NAB on 2012. At the time of that showing it was still running at reduced gamut, frame rate, and resolution (2K per eye), and was using a standard RED Prime lens for interim optics.

It looked great, but Jim said they still had much work to do... for example with reducing ghosting, improving contrast, etc... In addition this projector is slated to be scalable from a brightness perspective by being able to add multiple laser pumps feeding the projector head.

It's a pretty revolutionary design just for a projector, in addition to incoporating the internal version of the publicly released standalone RED player.

There are a bunch of tricky optical problems to solve... as evidenced by the fact that nobody else in the industry has a released a projector that:

- Incorporates lasers as a light source
- Decouples the light source from the projector head and uses fiber optics to interconnect them
- Runs at stereo 4K per eye
- Runs at 120FPS
- Has solved the issues of polarization crosstalk for 3D
- Allows multiple laser light sources for increased brightness
- Incorporates an ultra-gamut 4K playback mechanism
- Has (near) infinite contrast ratio
- Allows interchangeable lenses

Many of these issues have been worked on by many large companies with deep pockets for a long time, and still are not completely "solved" without room for significant improvement (contrast ratio comes to mind)... much less combined them all in to something slated to be priced anything less than what could be afforded by a nation-state.

I too am antsy to be able to buy one.... but I'm not under the impression that RED is needlessly delaying just because they can...

A lot of hype and excitement back in 2012 and now in 2014, wouldn't it be safe to say there is no Red Laser Projector?

Picked up the Sony VW-600ES in late December after deducing that RED was on a longer timeline than suited me.

Great to see RedRay's shipping, got mine yesterday and it sure was fun to show civilians what I've been blathering on about the last 7 years… ;-)

Cheers - #19

Jarred, has RED projector got FCC approval?

I know that it's not so easy to get it for a Laser based projector.

Well obviously when he says competition, and the competition is showing product there's must be a lot cheaper or a lot better. So maybe amazingly cheap like a home cinema projector, or amazingly better, and better than Dolby Vision/with 8k. ;)

Its great Red now don't hype tools that aren't' shipping or about to ship, would be be cool is if they keep us updated on past items they have hyped up in the past 6 years and gotten everyone excited about.
Surely talking about products you've already broadcast and marketed is a nice thing to keep current.

I've left a bunch of your Good points in Steven, but will try to address your last list below find individually. We have discussed a lit of potential partners issues previously.

- Incorporates lasers as a light source

There are projectors that gave done this for many years, even for $100 (which projector points to a possible root problem below).

- Decouples the light source from the projector head and uses fiber optics to interconnect them

Yes, heat could be an issue, also light escaping the fiber (easily solvable) and the bouncing around reducing light purity. But simply putting a dichroic filter at the end and of the fibre can reflect impure light to a light trap. Then brightness is tested and adjusted (bends in optic cables allow different amounts of light to escape or change.

- Runs at stereo 4K per eye

There is 8kx8k projectors.

- Runs at 120FPS
Still within doable data rates.

- Has solved the issues of polarization crosstalk for 3D

I thought that was the more easy one with the right screen Laser has natural advantage.

- Allows multiple laser light sources for increased brightness

Not so tricky except possibly heat. Normal three color filter prisms already do this. But then again a dichroic filter would try to pass the sane color both ways.

- Incorporates an ultra-gamut 4K playback mechanism

He, he, that is what a laser light source actually is, just add a new wider gamut container fotmat to process.

- Has (near) infinite contrast ratio

like three color Oled lasers are naturally like this.

- Allows interchangeable lenses

It dies not cost much to have a lens mount on a $200 camera or projector.

Potential issues, they are using a new scanned laser system that can produce contrast, gamut, polarization and ghosting issues (more of an LCD issue normally, hence they said they were talking to different manufacturers before the laser announcement, including Epson, but all these issues are also LCD issues). Like the micriovision pocket laser projector you could get for $100 clearance at one stage that used a physical scanning mechanism a new beaut custom scanning mechanism can take dine time to adjust for the above issues Red also seem to put the brakes on when research showed that anything above 25lux in a scanned mechanism could be unsafe and they changed approval regulation to fit this. I said I had a solution, but nobody bothered to contact me to find out. Now, even if LCD reflector using field sequences color, it might still present a real limitation for home use

They could be waiting for manufacturers to decide to make DMD or LCD abate chips available, at their good leisure. So the manufacturer says maybe this tear, then maybe next etc, and charges a bit for it. If you look at the old original Laservue projector it had 3d, full gamut full HD dmd in a rear projection for $7000, but the Australian company behind the technology had originally announced it was Besant for $1700 sets. The true cost difference between full HD and 4k, not that much, they should be able to do a home 4k laser for $2000 in large volume today, the desired marketing Dept cost though makes it t look $20k.

And other things I've forgotten now

However with developing new technology what they need us a master solution finder, a consultant that they hire in, who tries to get to grips with the technology and issues and finds a solution. Unfortunately this is rather like lining up the chooks from a big barnyard and looking for teeth, a rarity. They can spend 1 hour or a hundred getting to grips and ten minutes latter, or a thousand, come up with a solution and heaps of them. These people are the single biggest asset on the workforce, if they are not just lasy cruising nobs. True divergents more than most of us.

However, I'm starting to think it could just be the regulatory hurdles, and for theatre use, you normally don't let people stick their heads in front of a dangerous projector anyway. So once it settles down a theatre laser projector, or dim home projector might be readily available.

I agree. Good to at least know when its not coming etc. I'm still waiting for my fixed scarlet, which I imagine might possibly pop up in coming years. ;)

...if it's coming

Aw man, too bad. I guess the moment the REDray was being sold without odemax it was over.
I'm also very curious how or betty why they didnt make it.
