So the RedRay player seems to have been dropped by Red as far as I can gather which is a real shame. We got one of the first as a way to have a player hooked up to a UHDTV showing off all that lovely Red footage on a loop.
Now that we are not so central and customer facing, it has been sitting on a shelf.
These may have been a fraction before their time. 4K screens and projectors were really pricey in 2013 when this was released, HDMI 2 had not been ratified, then the cinema deal that these were meant to work with fell away.
But these are fantastically well built: industrial, not consumer. And with the RED codec you know you won't have nasty mpeg artifacts on your playback.
I'll be honest: encoding to it using Redcine-x isn't straightforward, it only plays 24fps or 23.98fps (unless I've missed something!) and it isn't the friendliest of menu structures. Output is either single UHD 1.4 HDMI or 4 way HDMI etc. You can remote control it over wifi or network so can be used as digital signage.
But if you want a reliable way of showing off your 4K footage, without having awful H264 compression, in your private 4K cinema, at your office showroom reception or at a trade show stand etc, this is a great way to do it.
As these are not really available anymore, I have no idea what the going rate for one would be so totally open to offers. It can be viewed and tested in London but will ship anywhere if buyer pays shipping.
