  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedRay Info Please - Purchasing Decission

Holy smokes, Jeff - you just wrote all of the things that are keeping me from picking up the REDRAY. The documentation, HDMI 2.0 and a way to load packages from external sources are absolutely key features for me. Let's hope RED will release an updated version of the player. Preferrably something a bit smaller, too.

There is documentation for the Redray… Not that we need it. It's pretty self-explanatory, other than the encoding process and package loading. Both of which are also discussed here on the forums. HDMI 2.0 isn't a deal breaker unless you need to show 4K at higher frame rates or in 3D. This is definitely an issue moving forward, though. The loading packages is a pain. Fine if you do one here or there, but otherwise could use some work. Wish we could load them over the network. Size isn't a problem unless you're looking for something super compact or mobile. It fits right in with most any media player or disc player.

The image quality an data rates are excellent. This is what the next generation of 4K+ Blu-Ray or other distribution really needs to be based on. But it's just not going to happen from a consumer product point of view. I could definitely see REDRAY format replacing DCP for cinema distribution if RED pushes into the market in the right way. That's where the whole REDRAY PRO, CRIMSON LASER PROJECTOR and REDRAY HOME LASER PROJECTOR all came into play. Not a peep about any of those for some time now...

HDMI2.0 is pretty new, the new HDCP-version isn't even ready yet. It just wasn't there.

The HDCP 2.2 spec for 4K was finalized in Feb of last year. It takes about a year to roll out a new HDMI standard after it's approved and products won't be wide-spread - some high-end stuff is available now using the first batches of HDMI 2.0 hardware - until the holiday shopping season. RED can update the RED RAY down the line when there are more HDMI 2.0 manufacturing lines.
