Let me add an idea...

This is an hypothetical statement I'm not asking to buy an EPIC I'm just doing an hypothesis in order to analyze the possibilities of the obsolesce argument.

I would buy an Epic FF35 (from an Ex. REDONE owner) in the box untouched for what it worth exactly if I buy it from RED... so a REDONE owner can trade his REDONE with RED and buy with his rebate a typical configuration, sell it to me and get a scarlet minus 12%...

So he will get from me the 17.5K$ and he will buy a Scarlet FF35 for less...

How about that?

Don't panic, there are many ways to take your money back...

Huh?

Just buy an R1 from an owner for 17.5. The ex-R1 owner can then go buy the Scarlett and have 5k left over (minus 12% has nothing to do with it).

The used-R1 owner can then use the upgrade option and trade up for the Epic. (This only benefits the new Epic owner if the serial number is low enough to cut in line)

Is that what you mean?

Hi Evangelos,

I think you will be able to buy a used Red One for a fairly low price long before Epic is available.

I think so too. As soon as the new cameras are in production, Red can stop production of the Red One an there'll be a few thousand ones floating around in the market anyway, since it's a sturdy machine.

IMHO, there are more Red Ones out there by now than there are people who can make full use of it. They may find out and start selling them. Plus, Red is not going to throw the ones they trade-in into the shredder. If they are not going to the big film companies in Central Africa or other poor places of the world they will just sell them.

Just my two cents (Euro, going down again).

the generous trade in available from red will keep red one prices from going down until the process runs its course. that will probably take two years.

you amuse anyone over here.. you an elite shooter.. man of bargains.. vaporbargains actually..

nice try though.

Me, too thinks the trade-in option will keep the ONE price floating.
Scarlet, though...

yep, but for "executed" R1 it's another story.
*R1 with upgraded S35 sensor, about $19000

*R1 with executed status for an scarlet, (w/old sensor, depending on when next sensor upgrade is here and what is cost) about $9000

*R1 with un-used executed status, about $15000

There will be two kinds of RED ONE, those having not yet been used for a trade in and those used for it. Their second hand value will not be the same from the day Scarlet S35 becomes available ... up to the day is approaching when the trade in program expires and the EPICs brains become cheaper by ... what amount did you say, 17500 ? :innocent:

BTW, given the financial implications, crazy is the RED ONE owner who accepts the discount or sensor upgrade option for Red One : It is financially more interesting to sell it to a potential EPIC customer and buy two Scarlets instead.

A crazy thought : A RED ONE upgraded with Mysterium - X might be worth less than one that can be traded in for an EPIC brain.

Yes, definitely a big possibility, if the new Monstro sensor is REALY good and, everyone want it :)

you guys are all dreaming......how many people are going to be upgrading to epics? not as many as there are redone's out there why would i buy a redone if i really want an epic, unless the price is substantially lower? what's the advantage?
(answer: there isn't one)

The big question still remains:

Who will be able to trade in the R1?

The original owner only or any one that has the camera?

The one who has the camera (assuming no other option was already excecuted). So owners of second hand R1's will still be able to trade in for the credit towards an Epic if they so choose.

The advantages are two - as far as I see them:

1) The price on a REDOne is substantially lower than an Epic.
You can't compare the pricing of a 'brain' with the pricing on a full camera as an apples to apples comparisson
(and we don't yet know the pricing on the modules.)

2) RedOne is in the market and working now, and Epic is probably a year away. For those who don't own a REDOne, Epic might even be further away
(as RedOne owners are going to get first crack at the new cameras when they are released).

I think you misunderstood me Luis. I was rhetorically asking the question in the context of someone buying a redone for the purpose of upgrading to epic. This has been given as a reason for the price of used r1's staying the same. I'm not comparing the two. I'm saying that if the demand for epic is much lower than the demand for r1/scarlet, there is no reason for people to buy a r1 in order to upgrade to epic.

Yes it is. However, people who are going to use the epic are high end users, a much smaller group. There just isn't going to be the demand we think for used r1's (since the reason for buying one is to skip the line)

I didn't understand why this thread was moved to "Jobs/equipment for hire"...

I just post a thread that is totally hypothetical just to show the one possibility that was not discussed regarding the obsolesce argument that same are imposing...

I strongly suggest to moderators to move back the thread to REDONE general discussion since I didn't put an advert in order to buy an EPIC FF35 since the camera its not exist for at least a year (winter 2009)... my argument is totally hypothetical... probably I didn't put it well from the start... the language barrier... I will edit the original post to clarify...
