  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Don't know if this has already come up as a "request", however I was wondering if Red intends to release a web/app simulator for Redmote. From the pictures Mark Pederson has posted in the Recon Offhollywood thread and on Twitter it looks like Epic's menu is going to be quite easy to configure and operate, however I really like what Arri has done with their Alexa simulator and when I got to put my hands on the camera I felt like I had already used it before. I'm pretty sure many camera assistants (as well as future camera owners, operators, etc) would be quite happy if such a simulator was released, though not being a web designer I frankly don't know how difficult it would be to design such a thing.
Thank you

F.

These menu simulators are very easy to do. Surprised more of them don't exist. I'm not a super expert web programmer but I think I could make one in a few days. Hopefully someone at red thinks the same and actually does it.

Why stop at a simulator? An iOS / Android app which would be able to simulate and remote control a REDMOTE might be useful at times. Although remote controlling a remote control does seem quite redundant. RED may choose to implement a mobile app to remote control EPIC and Scarlet for users without REDMOTEs.

Andrew, that's what I initially thought reading your post :-)

That sounds like a good reason, though.

Still, no matter how easy RedMote is (and it surely looks that way), an online simulator would be priceless when it comes to familiarizing oneself with the camera. I don't know when Epic will be available in good numbers at rental houses worldwide, so it may take a while for a lot of people who are going to work with it to put their hands on it and learn how to use it. A simulator would help, a lot.

why not just app it for menus on a touch screen phone and just use redmote for lens control?

A while ago Jim asked "what does proffesional mean" and i think having access to the SDK of the menu apps will set this camera well into another ballpark from Arri (What it hasn't already.)

dont worry guys.. working on it. and it wont be just a simulator.. it will be an actual app.

Very cool, this has lots of possibilities.
I hope there will be some love from RED for those upcoming Android-tablets too.

you wouldn't be controlling the remote (redundant), you'd be controlling the camera directly.

When I made that comment about remote controlling the REDMOTE, I was responding to the post asking for a REDMOTE simulator. Since the REDMOTE isn't a touchscreen interface, the mobile app will be pretty unlikely to have the same interface, unless it has a specific simulator for people to learn.

That same virtual REDMOTE interface, if it could also remote control the camera, would probably communicate with the brain but the settings would update on any paired REDMOTE as well at the same time. If RED wanted to force people into buying REDMOTEs and not just buying the cheaper iPhone app they could force it to not work unless a REDMOTE was present. If this were the case, effectively you'd be remote controlling a REDMOTE. Thankfully, RED don't seem to have that kind of business model. It's more likely that the mobile app will be able to control the brain itself without the need for a REDMOTE.

this is getting crazy...next thing is that we are going to run epic on android or similar OS
and make the camera an FTP anabled, control it across the world with live streaming and geo tagging the position...and watch live how the camera operator plays angry birds or call of duty during the shoot...and wait, there is the second camera in lcd showing the operator live on facebook profile... I honesty do not see where it stops... and I love it, and i am scared of it... REALY !!!

Wow, that is surprising and excellent news. I imagine the app will be a nice feature where dumbed down but necessary options relative to settings can be changed (framerate, aperture, etc.), but other abilities like the number of programmable buttons or focus control will be REDMOTE exclusives? Something along those lines? If not, then I'd say this app is a pretty generous gift from RED...and it is the time for giving... :-)
