  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

RedMote - Please Red

Handly little solution Les, but ideally I'd like to make the electrical/data connection between RedMote & Camera. Just not sure if that's even possible.

Hi Bob

There is a real hole in the market here... I've bent the ear of a few guys asking for this.

I want a battery plate (like the Viewfactor one) that safely goes on the back of the Epic that extends the electrical contacts on the back of the camera to a lemo on the side. I'd then like the same people to sell me a remote shuttle mount that makes proper contact and I can use different lemo cable as I need. Simple?? I'd atach it to the Dumb side most of the time (and I wouldn't have to worry about charging) but it would be great for stuff like splash bag work where Wifi dosn't work...

And while they are at it make the Battery plate distrubte power for all our accessories in a neat way..... NOT just one P-tap!!! Also we need proper Battery comuncation for Red batteries...

I like Michaels ideas for a battery plate that will also mount the Redmote.

We've received ours and in my very limited tests, it has worked perfectly. I've tested it to over 20' without a hitch.

My suggested improvements: a lanyard ring, and a provision for hard-wiring it to the camera. Might be useful to provide a way to power it with batteries as well.

Have allocation for my REDmote, but hasn't shipped, so ...

Of the current choices in battery plates, which is the 'lesser evil' - and what are the "gotcha's" I need to worry about, in relation to using the REDmote - and other accessories such as powering remote FF?

I'll try and get back later with a fuller answer but:

I have 2 VF plates. I bought them because they where 1st to market and VF's Epic/5d stuff is good. I prefer the way they attach to the camera more than the others I have seen. Curt and Brook originally suggested they would be upgradeable and I am hopeful. VF also has a way of attaching the Redmote to the side of the camera and (most importantly) keeping it charged (this is currently not as elegantly as I would like). Now it works but it is not 100% ideal...We also use P-Tap to 4xPTap distrubution boxes (from Hawkwoods). Occasionally if you stick too much on the camera you will have to run another Vlock battery and HW have some interesting sleds for this.

The Meizler module looks very interesting for certian markets. And if you want 75% of what it offers is seems great. I really hope they find a way to add the extra VF/Monitor out?

My big problem with the accessories market is I am not seeing enought focus on 'real' shooting solutions. There is too much focus on 'product' and not enough innovation. The 'me too' but slightly cheaper/Shinier/Blacker/cooler aproach might drive down prices so basic stuff is affordable (and I don't want to knock that as I have really benefited) BUT we as customers need to reward innovation as much as we reward price. The Red camera was cheap but it also had some 'real' non-cost innovation (Redcode and all the consequences of redcode being the biggest). Remember Dalsa was 1st to market was very well placed but NEVER managed to get 1 feature shot. We as a community have to demand and REWARD innovation... are we up to it??

PS for nearly 12 months I have had scribbled on a piece of paper a design for a very simple solution for one of the Red Epics biggest problem. In the replacement S16/ENG.EFP market we should be able to take the camera out of a box/bag and put it on a shoulder (well balanced ) or tripod without adding or taking away. I could do it with a Digi-beta or a Atton XTR!!! There is no real cleverness in what I scribbled but the reason nobody had brought it out is simple. it is a cheap product which you can not protect by IP law or through complexity in material or manufacturing. It is simply not worth making... who suffers?

Jeff and I have corresponded about this, but shipping was high for him because of our system not liking where he lives. We do offer a cheaper shipping option on request for those who may have this issue.

Ours also comes with a lanyard, with a choice of two colors.
 
i have tried running the redmote wirelessly on multiple shoots. it has never been totally reliable. during long interview shots itll drop connection. i am almost always running two epics withing ten feet of each other with a redmote in each hand. however i have had them farther apart. even one redmote to the epic up, say 10 feet, loses connection.
could this be because of a two camera setup at all?
seems like the experience on the forum says no that even with one camera its a constant issue.
just had to send someone from set to go get a start/stop cable since im ditchin the motes today.

Do you have the latest firmware on Camera & Redmotes? It was m understanding that this latest firmware (3.0) solved a lot of connectivity problems between camera and mote. Like anything, I'm guessing it's still a work in progress.
 
I wonder why my redmote is occassionaly showing redmote battery with red color and then after one second it is correct green again :-)
I have latest beta camera and redmote firmware.
Loosing connection is common.
I'm waiting tomorrow for new bea.
 
Just got my REDmote and my Scarlet's about a week old. Unsure of firmware version, but my Scarlet is 3.0.0.

After getting it to connect using Scarlet menus, I've yet to see it drop after moving 50 feet away.

Whatever they have done to the devices lately seems to have resolved any issues, at least when used in the city inside a home

I'm not sure what 'Stage 3' is - but ... if it was some kind of an upgrade package, this is an original purchase Scarlet.

I just delayed my shipment a bit thinking that in the end, RED would sort it all out.

If the buttons stay on and working (wasn't the enter key problematic for some?), then I'm very happy with the REDmote.
