  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

I only ordered a REDMOTE since it looked to me to be the most flexible way to control the camera. The sidehandle just seemed like expensive extra weight (since I don't want to invest in the REDVOLT power system) with less control and the touchscreen seems too expensive and low resolution and using touchscreen control really seems impractical and annoying and I already have a great TVlogic 5.6".

I'm a bit concerned that I may not be able to pair it with the camera without another control device that can be used to tell the camera to pair with the REDMOTE. I initially figured when attached to the camera the REDMOTE must connect through a wired connection or that there clearly would be a way to use the REDMOTE without first attaching a sidehandle or touchscreen to control the camera, but now I'm beginning to question if that is the case. Can anyone shed some light on this? Am I going to have to take my new Scarlet to a rental house or local Scarlet or Epic owner and use their touchscreen/sidehandle to connect my redmote? If that is the case I'd probably have the same issue every time I update the firmware, too. Could this method be a problem in the long run?

The Redmote is wireless to the camera, you don't need anything else to use the RedMote.

IMO- The 5" Touchscreen is the best way to control the camera, it is fast and doubles as a monitor. The resolution is perfect for the size, you wouldn't be able to see an improvement of higher res in this size monitor.

I too considered the option you are taking, controlling the camera only through Redmote. In theory, it makes sense. But aside from the issues you discuss here, I've been advised the device is simply not reliable. Not enough to count on it as your only source of control. That's what I've been advised. I'm going to get the handle.

I've been told the 5" touchscreen is not adequate for critical focus. A monitor such as the 5.6" TV Logic, with much higher res and focus check, false color, and a number of other features is probably needed to really count on a good reference, especially for critical focus.

You will need to pair the REDMote with brain to use in wireless mode. You should be able to do this with the REDMote attached.

Since edge focus was added in 1.7.n, it's easy to nail focus with the 5" LCD.

The REDMote is on back order. Stage 2 folks are still waiting on them. You may end up getting a Scarlet without a way to control it, until they are out of back order. I can't imagine not owning a touch LCD.

You only need to pair the REDmote with the camera to connect to it wirelessly. You can always control the camera by docking the REDmote on the back (assuming they are both on compatible versions). Once docked on the back, you can use the REDmote to pair the two so you can also connect to the camera wirelessly.

Are you confirming that the REDMOTE can be paired without another control device? Or that it can control the camera while docked without pairing? From the manual it looks as though the REDMOTE cannot be used without pairing and that pairing is a function that is accessed through menus, which would only be possible to execute using another control device.

As for the LCD, it does look nice and I always like using RED LCDs with RED1 partly just because they are so lightweight and high quality, but now that I am buying it myself and very budget conscious, buying a 5" 800x480 lcd for $1600 that only works with one camera and only works with short, expensive proprietary cables, when I have a $1300 1280x800 TVlogic 5.6" LCD that comes with lots of other functions and works with other cameras seems very hard to swallow. I don't doubt that RED's touchscreen implementation is quite nice, but in my experience with a couple prosumer cameras that use touchscreens, its usually pretty painful to use since your hand is never naturally on or near the screen while operating and it obscures your view when you use it and leaves fingerprints afterwards.

According to the backorder update RED posted on Nov 8, they said the REDMOTE should be out of backorder by Dec 15 and I ordered mine Nov 3, so if they stick to that there shouldn't be more than a week or two difference between when my scarlet and redmote ship. Also the LCD and side handle are both backordered or pre-orders as well at the moment so it is not clear whether one or another would be more likely to be available sooner. Then again they said the LCD should have been out of backorder in the Nov 8 backorder update, so hopefully that is not an indication of its credibility... In any case, availability is not my primary concern, no matter what I order, its not clear it will be available immediately and its not clear I will be able to control my Scarlet right away when I receive it. I'm ok with that if it must be that way, I'm just more concerned about whether the REDMOTE as the single control device is a reasonable strategy. I would greatly prefer not to have to buy more than one control device, but I'd rather know now if there is no way around it.

So then the consensus is that the REDMOTE does work for controlling the camera without any kind of wireless pairing if it is docked on the back of the camera? This is from experience with its functionality on EPIC or what? Thanks for sharing your knowledge!

You need to pair the Redmote, but it DOES NOT require any other "device"

The 5" LCD is a must have IMO...your mileage may vary, but I would highly recommend it. Ive never had an issue focusing with it (there is also a 1:1 mode where you are looking at actual pixels), although a larger monitor helps.
Keep in mind this is not an SDI Monitor, so you can use the 5" LCD + your TVLogic SDI Monitor at the same time, one for operator, one for AC.

As others have pointed out Redmotes are on backorder, so you likely won't have any control until backorders are fulfilled.

Yes, you can control the camera with a docked REDmote without pairing. This works the same on EPIC and SCARLET.

Great!. OK, now what if I have a v-mount plate (third party) on the back of the camera? Id this wired connection to Redmote still pausible?

Great, thanks to everyone who answered for setting my fears to rest.

I agree it is nice to have an additional monitor, but I'm more inclined to buy a less expensive monitor with more features and a broader resell market and more use when I'm not shooting on my scarlet. If I add the touchscreen it nearly doubles the cost of AKS for me. I am doing everything relatively small since I will not be renting out my gear a lot and prefer to limit the amount of equipment I have depreciating and insuring and keeping in my small Manhattan apartment. I'd prefer to have productions rent various AKS for bigger jobs anyway. I don't doubt the touchscreen is a great option to have though.

What you could do..... Have REDMote attached to camera, and use the pages (buttons 4-8 on side of REDMote screen) to control most aspects of the camera. If you press button 5, there should be a "HDSDI Mode" selection there. Make sure that this say's "PREVIEW". You then should be able to see menu options on your HD-SDI Monitor that you have attached. If "HDSDI" say's anything else besides "PREVIEW" then push button 2, switching from "REMOTE" mode to "LOCAL" mode. You will have a red line pop up which you can navigate over and change the square "HDSDI Mode" to what you need. When you have all the menu's showing on your HD-SDI monitor, you would then be able to have FULL control over the camera, thus being able to go into the "REMOTE" menu and activating the wireless function. I must say though that to get the true full menu's on HD-SDI, you cannot have a EVF / LCD cable plugged in when you boot up. Other wise not all the menu's show (at least as of 1.6.44).

Remember if the REDMote is in "LOCAL" mode (button 2 to switch) you are controlling the menu's that are shown on the REDMote. If you are in "REMOTE" mode you would be controlling the menu's that show on your monitor.

Im interested in this too. If you are using an APU plate on the back of the camera, how could you still use REDMOTE reliably to control the camera?
