I'm guessing at this point RED is waiting until Thunderbolt 2.0 to release a TB RedMag reader. My only request would be dual port TB. Please, please don't give me another dead-end TB device. Thank you! :-)

A dual SSD dock would sell pretty well I would imagine as well...

Card readers are usually not bottlenecked by the interface if you're using USB3 or even eSata. The SSD's themselves can only be read up to a certain speed. A faster interface doesn't change that if you're already near the limit of the card. I'm not sure whether that's actually the case here, but it should be noted.

True, not sure the max R/W of the current SSD's. But it would be nice to streamline with the current (and future) Mac offerings nonetheless.

its time someone made a 1U, rack mountable, multi-slot interchangeable professional grade reader for CF, SD, redmags, SxS, etc.. new sony mags and CODEX mags. 2.5" slot.. 3.5inch slot. all optional.. thunderbolt and usb 3 on the back of it.. or at least a QIO with redmag slots instead of obsolete P2 slots with TB and usb3 on the back. that would make it worth the thousand usd and i bet sonnet would sell a ton of them. my 2c.

i love TB but red mags don't even saturate USB 3....i don't think a TB reader would be faster in any way...that said i would prefer a TB reader as well....

I guessing we'll see an update in SSD's in the (could be a long time) not so distant future with faster speeds which could take advantage of it.

From the Red Store: "REDMAG 1.8” SSD (512GB) enables DSMC users to roll for longer periods of time, making it a great solution for documentaries or live events. Along with expanded capacity, this REDMAG features higher data rates, allowing you to capture high-speed footage with less compression."

So i guess they already have done this with the 512GB card. But it's just not in very many peoples hands yet.

I still haven't seen anyone test the 512gb card with the current RED Station to see if it can go over 200MB/s. Can't tell if that is the limit of the cards or the reader with the mags I have.

The 512 GB card reads around 225-240 MB/s over eSATA and around 150 MB/s over USB3, but that's more of an issue with the 8/10 USB3 legacy throughput over PCI-e, I'm sure it would run 240 MB/s if connected to a better USB3 controller directly off a motherboard.

I'd like to see a PCI-e slot red SSD reader, it would fit directly onto any motherboard or in any TB or PCI-e expansion case.

Yes, but I ALSO need P2. It's not obsolete.

I get about 200 MB/s on USB 3. Thunderbolt will only benefit newer SSD tech. I do believe the current 64-256gb redmag cards are Sata II which tops out theoretically at 300MB/s.

...yeah I'm pulling a little over 220MB/s from the 512GB to a 6G 512 SSD both connected through USB 3 on a MacBook Pro Retina. For most production that is more than enough speed. The cost of upgrading to TB on a reader just isn't justified. TB is great tech for I/O, I'm just not convinced it's worth the price tag for transfer or single or even dual drive raids yet. USB 3 is pretty capable and also compatible at this point in the game. TB 2 in a couple years could be fast enough and widespread enough to make it worth it.
