Redlink limitations, benefits

As a programmer of 10+ years turned filmmaker, Redlink presents very exciting opportunities for me. I already have several plans for iPhone apps, but wanted to check if there were any limitations to what redlink SDK will permit us to access? For example Red THC allows you to control auto focus lenses via RedLink. Will the SDK still allow full access to lens focusing, such that another competitor could develop another device with same functionality as the Red THC? Not that I am interested in developing such a device, but just wanted to make sure there weren't any limitations to what we can access before going full speed ahead.

A secondary question is that the Red brains already have builtin wifi control via the Redmote. Why is another RedLink module needed to interface with the Brain. I'm guessing the Redlink provides more functionality, additional benefits over the builtin wifi interface?

The RED Brains only include wireless connectivity to the REDmote, not traditional wifi.
