Redirect 2016."outdoor adventure lifestyle story".Your first technical thoughts?

Hello,
it's my first thread:sorry if it's the wrong forum.
I've just viewed the seven videos online among the 8 contestants. It seems the technical qualities are globally a little bit less good than the last REDirect (surfing lifestyle) which was shot with the Epic M Dragon.
Not sure at all it's because Scarlet W (i'm waiting for the beast!).I'd like to debate mainly about technical qualities more than the stories. For example:
1/ about "The process" by Jess Hoffman:
I am very fond of B&W.Is the Scarlet W monochrome would have been a lot more superior when viewing on youtube or vimeo? and why?
2/More important, i found almost all shots in very low light not very good.Except on "Flakes of folklore"( Matt Hardy) which is btw my vote (but i'm waiting for the 8th video coming). Is it a problem from the Scarlet W? I think not but i don't know how to avoid " group of pixels" in dark area.Is it youtube compression?or is it technical choices (exposure ...)
3/ all the macro i've seen in theses 7 shorts are very nice.Do you think the macro shots can be good even with an average lens unlike landscapes which need superior lens to be perfect?.I think the lens used in these videos can make the difference.
4/ Useless to say sound is very important. You can judge the variations.
But the story can make the difference.A good story and we forget the technical qualities!
As we say in french: Que le meilleur gagne!
What do you think?
PS: Vote before august 8 th

I would have to agree with you in respect to only one of these films looked at all cinematic. Iv seen more visually compelling images from other people on YouTube doing tests with the scarlet w than some of these entries. Have a watch of Jason Hans short with the scarlet w it's on Vimeo and YouTube. I liked the red epic dragon entires better like you said

I agree with you about Jason Han's short.Perhaps post-production is the key in the difference between the seven shorts. The crew involved and the arduous context too.Nevertheless well rigged scarlet w can do the job.

I was also underwhelmed by the technical quality and the stories, no match for the spectacular surfing stuff from last year. I was also wondering why Krystle Wright, who is in the BTS film, is not mentioned anywhere else as far as being a contestant.

Krystle Wright

Most of the time Surfing is easier to shoot.Except when you shoot from into the sea.In this case you must be in very good shape and sometimes fearless.
Outdoor "adventures" often mean mountains, trekking, cold temperature etc...So you must be a performer. Performer + good shooter (even with redcam) is not common. For example
I think Renan Ozturk (https://vimeo.com/59626663) is kind of state in the art about shooting outdoor adventures.

Marc, I agree with you. The conditions in the mountains can be far more difficult to shoot in than a beach. However, even though I know that your original post was more about technical details than story, I think both are missing in this latest round. Also, the light in the mountains is very different than on a beach, especially at higher altitudes. Mountain Light is a fantastic read from the legendary Galen Rowell. (Miss that guy....) In any case, I do NOT think anything that may be lacking in these films is because they were shooting on the Scarlet-W.

Hey Everyone,

Just wanted to reply to some of the feedback which is appreciated. There were some unique challenges with this REDirect as we really wanted to push the envelope and have shooters show a range of content. Keep in mind with the Surf REDirect we had a lot of shooters who had experience shooting with RED before, with REDirect Explore this was the first time for pretty much everyone and they only have a certain amount of shooting days.

In regards to Krystal's participation there was a conflicting project which kept her from being able to fully participate.

Thanks,

Keegan

Michael, Thanks for weighing in. I am disappointed to hear about Krystle not being able to participate. I am a big fan of her work. On the guys being essentially first time RED shooters, that is what I thought might be the case. Cheers to RED for bringing them into the family.

Scot, thanks for the info about Galen Rowell.I'm going to read the book.BTW i can't wait to use Zone system concept with my coming scarlet W.

Michael, thanks for your comments about this Redirect.I like the choice to open the contest with red beginners.I'm waiting for J. Schusler's short. But i don't want to stress him!
I'm a beginner in Red world & ecosystem .I hope doing as well as the Redirect explore contestants.
I'm learning a lot of things on Reduser forum and watching the Redirect productions .Thanks to organize this contest.

Scot,i 've ordered the book but Amazon canceled, due to availability i think.I'll try to get it next time in USA.
I agree last short film shows very good technical qualities.About Scarlet w doubts are removed.Shooters need time for the learning curve.

I'm watching with more sharpness all the short videos. I'd like redusers involved in outdoor shooting to express themselves beyond technical qualities.Don't know if it must be a new thread.
I'm contemplating the style and substance of surfing (often "surf porn" video) and outdoor videos we habitually watch online.
The 8 videos from 2016 Redirect are a real step ahead of the common online clips. This is due to the story already present and to the qualities of the production and the post-prod.Time is coming:shooters have to destabilise the viewers and take them (and themselves) out of the comfort zone.
For example, why not a story with humor, burlesque style or even dark humor.
But don't forget,as we say in France:criticism is easy but art is difficult!
Your thoughts?

Thanks Marc! I was the creator of Flakes of Folklore. I appreciate the kind words. One of the biggest challenges was the lack of time available for post production. Adobe only sent the beta premiere version 6 days before the project was due. This left me no time to do a proper color grade, just a lut! Slightly bummed on not getting first or second, but that's what happens when things are judged.

I have shot a lot in the past on the Epic and the Dragon. The W definitely has a much different feel to it, but overall is smaller and more capable.

Best,
M

Good luck for your career Matt. Never forget: Flakes of Folklore is the most viewed amid the 8 shorts! I'm fond of landscapes and they are stunning.
It's a pity we can't see commonly short doc on big screen. Back in the time in France, a short documentary was always projected before the main movie at theater.

I thought the most "liked" video will be the winner:
Seen on Redirect pages: This year’s winner will be determined by the contestant video that receives the most ‘Likes’ on RED’s 4K YouTube Channel, Shot on RED.
But also: Contest submissions were reviewed by a panel of judges—including the winners of REDirect Skate 2014 and Surf 2015—who scored each entry based on their cinematic qualities and narrative.

BTW, It would be nice to have BTS videos and informations about fast workflow when shooting outdoor with this kind of deadline and small (?) crew. Especially for a "newbie" like me!

Thanks for your informations and your encouragement about the scarlet W and i'm thankful to RED for the organization of REDirect contest.
This exciting REDirect Explore and former editions would deserve a thread beyond only technical qualities. So much things to discuss.

Marc
