So in the spirit of RedRelay (footage) and RedHax (technical info), there now exists a global database for Red owners to create a profile listing their gear, location, etc. - including a gallery of their shot-on-Red images. Producers/clients can search this database, in order to find owners/shooters in their area, without having to crawl the forums post by post. Plus, it's a splashy way to look at cool images. The site is here:

UPDATE 9/13/2013: Here's the text of the email I just sent out. The site, sadly, is no more. Thanks to everyone who participated.

-----------------------------------------------------
To all users of RedConnector.com:

Sadly, I'm going to have to shut the site down, effective this Sunday 9/13. I received an email from Red asking me to take the site down due to the use of the word "Red" in the name. Which is understandable, given the "defend it or lose it" nature of Trademark law in the U.S. (Though they also expected me to sign over the domain name, which I felt was a little heavy-handed.)

Thanks to everyone who used the site, and I hope you found it a useful tool. RedConnector was one of the first "community" sites set up back in 2007, shortly after the original Red Ones started shipping. I think few, if any, have lasted this long.

With the explosion in Red gear & accessories, I haven't been able to maintain the site recently in any case, so this is an opportune time to close it down. If you've got any info/images that you need for your personal use, please grab them by Sunday night (New York time).

And if you're ever in need of a Red camera in NYC, give me a shout at mitch@houseofpain.org or info@redconnector.com

Thanks again,
Mitch

This is a repeat post, for the purpose of making it sticky. It should also be mentioned that there are other great production-oriented sites out there, such as Ed Watkins' RevolutionRentals, Mandy, etc. (RedConnector.com is, however, specific to Red and to this community.)

Please use this thread to request features, etc. I can't promise I'll be spending all my time coding for the good of (Red-owning) humanity, since this is a freebie - but I am interested in making it a good resource for people.

Nice work Mitch!!

Thanks, nice job.

I would suggest not requiring creating an account to search for users. You are going to lose alot of potential clients looking for cameras who dont want to create an account just to search for a camera.

Thanks for the feedback. Right now, you actually can access the Search page without being logged in, but can't read profiles. When I get some time I'll try to figure out how to change that.

Note, however, that a Producer account only requires 3 bits of information - it's not the big deal that a Red Owner account is. I probably won't go completely registration-free for contacting members, though. The problems are: 1) it opens the door to spambots, which can become a significant issue, and 2) I'd like to know who's using the site, to discourage scammers... it's a small barrier, but asking for a real name and production company is analogous to shutting the front door when you leave the house.

In other news: I've actually gotten a couple of messages from people looking to hire already, off of the sample profile I posted. (Which I've taken down, since it was a sample - I won't even receive my camera for a few more weeks!)

Oh - and I'm also planning to add a "search by geographical radius" function. Another item that I have to figure out how to code.

Just an update: RedConnector has passed the 100-member mark! (124, as of this writing.) Also, lots of great new images up on the front page, and in the user galleries. Keep 'em coming, everyone. And, I've had a few reports of people starting to get work through the site - which ain't half bad.

So as a final (I hope - all this website stuff can be sort of exhausting) effort to promote the site to producers, I've decided to donate a few weeks' worth of future rental time toward two lucky projects. Hence:

Code:
The RedConnector Filmmaker Competition
[URL="http://www.redconnector.com/competition/home"]www.redconnector.com/competition/home[/URL]
One short and one feature will win a free camera package rental.

And yes, there's an entry fee. Basically, this is because Withoutabox.com charges an arm and a leg, and I'll be submitting the competition to them. All the rest goes toward bandwidth fees for the site. Trust me, I'm not snorting the cash up my nose. That said, there's a $5 discount for RedUsers with the code "RFC_REDUSER".

What do you get ?

The satisfaction of a job well done, and a monthly bandwidth bill?

No, but seriously... If I understand your question correctly, the answer is that it seemed like there ought to be such a site for the community, so I designed one. I sort of wanted to learn more about web design anyway. But it's not a money-making endeavor, it's just to help people find gigs & to promote the use of the Red.

Nice Job Mitch...Great Idea!!!

At some point, I want to add a geolocation-based search (enter your coords on a map, and search by radius). But to be honest, I'm so slammed right now, it'll probably be some time before I'm able to put in that much effort.

However - you can currently sort each column of the search, just by clicking on the column heading. So it is possible, though not as slick as I'd like: click on "city" or "country" to sort, then just skip down to whatever location you want.

Basically, as often as I get around to it. At some point in the future, I'll implement a "live" randomizer, so that it appears that the images are changing every time you visit the homepage. But for now, some lucky member gets to be first up every time.

Update: finally fixed the bug that was causing the site to look messed up in IE7. (Though why anyone is still using IE at this point in time is beyond me.)

Also updated the rotating gallery. Some really nice work people are tossing up there.
