So how is it possible to compress 4K footage to 27 mb/sec? That's just a little more than HDV compression, isn't it? Maybe I'm way off base, or misunderstanding something.

That's 27MB/s, not Mb/s. HDV is a little over 3.1 Megabytes per second (25 MegaBITs). Redcode is 27 MegaBYTEs per second.

Common mistake to see MB and Mb and not differentiate.

And don't forget the magic pixies!

HDV has a bitrate of 25 Mbit/s. This equals 3.1 MB/s.
Red has a bitrate of 216 Mbit/s. This equals 27 MB/s.

So the RedOne has almost ten times the data as HDV.

And a -much- better wavelet codec than the HDV-MPEG2 with Gops, and is using raw data.
HDV is really a bad format.

However, having been an uncompressed snob for a long time, i have to admit that i am still really surprised how good the modern datareductions look and perform in D.I. / VFX / Colorcorrection.
