  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Some figures on compression ratios....

David,

I haven't tried to analyze all your numbers, but they're not making sense.

Just looking at the EPIC S35 -- I come up with just shy of 600MB/s for uncompressed 12bit RAW @ 30fps for 5120x2700. So I'm not sure where you're coming up with 2x as a compression ratio??? Also, as with REDCODE 28 and 36 on the RED One, those numbers are relative to a specific format -- 4K 16:9, IIRC. I want to assume that REDCODE 42 and 225 are also measured in similar fashion. However, we don't know what they would be referencing, if it's still the same 4K benchmark before and the compression ratios would work out to 42 and 225 MB/s on that data, respectively? Or is it something else?

REDCODE 28 on the RED One gives us roughly 12:1 compression, regardless of which format and frame rate we are shooting.

I'll run the figures again in a bit....

But as a rough I'm going....
9.4M x 30 /RC36 = 7.8 or 8

I'm supposing your doing
12M x 30 /RC28 = 12.8 or 12

memo to self....don't post on the run.

Could just be the rounded off numbers too... Like I said, I didn't figure 'em all out.

At this point, the REDCODE 42 and 225 are just arbitrary numbers. We don't know how what that is based on. I think it's safe to assume they mean 42MB/s and 225MB/s respectively, but at what resolution, frame rate and bit depth? For example, if REDCODE 225 is still calculated based on a 12bit 4K 16:9 frame @ 24fps, that figures out to a compression ratio of 1.44:1. Likewise, the 225 number could be figured on a 16bit 6K frame @ 30fps, which would equate to a compression ratio of 6:1.

Yeah I was running rough figures up the flag pole!

I never found out what the variances were with RedOne.
I guess we just assumed for RC36 that 36MB/s was the max & rate for 4K/16:9/30fps and the rest was a little bit less!!

It'll be a little more of an issue with the Epic frame rate variances, particularly with ramping (thanks Martin).
Maybe Red doesn't know yet.

It would be nice if the RC was selectable. Frankly 225 MB/s is huge and most apps would be happy at 50 max. Maybe in low light situations 100-200 would be sweet? Its nice to have options but if post/field hardware is minimal....

Maybe there is a new super Cray computer commercially available...

Or some new Reduser cloud computing architecture using X-box or Playstation...

ya I could see that lol!

I would assume it is. On Jim's chart, it says the RED ONE had RC36, but we know you can select RC28 also.

It has been stated in more than one post around here that EPIC will record up to REDCODE 225. And that current media, including the upcoming RED RAM, will not handle that data rate.

Thanks Jeff et al.. I haven't seen those posts...zillions of them floating around these days as I'm sure you know.

I thought there was a post from Jim or Jarred saying that all peripherals to R1 will work with Epic? Except the top handle.

I want to hold off spending money on additional media if it is not going to work with Epic (especially RAM at $4500!).

These kinds of data rates kind of point to the fact that they probably won't work!

it will work with EPIC. it just wont record RC225.
