So I'm creating dailies from a Red Epic and a Red One MX for a feature and I'm encountering some problems. I am transcoding the footage to 23.976 DNX 36 MXF wrapped for use in MC 6. The transcodes seem to go smoothly. When I'm done I have the mxf folder, the AAF folder and the ALE. I copy the mxf files into the appropriate folder on an Isis partition. The media database rebuilds as expected. I import the AAF files into a bin and most show up as expected, but about 25% of them are offline. Relinking does nothing. Refreshing the database does nothing. Rebuilding the media database files by throwing them away rebuilds database, but does not bring the problem clips online. When I return to Redcine X, the problem clips are all there (not corrupt) and there is nothing particularly unique about the ones that didn't transfer. I run another batch of the problem clips and most are fine but there are still a few that have the same issue. By this process of refinement, the job gets done but it's quite the PITA.

I'm running Redcine-X build 17.27144 with a red rocket with 1.1.16.11 firmware on a plenty powerful westmere macpro running OSX 10.7.4. Raw files are read from a Gig-E connected Isilon file server and transcodes have been written to the desktop (where I move them to the Isilon partition). Anybody have any ideas on how to fix this problem. Thanks in advance.

You can always try this: Create the usual MC folder structure:

Avid MediaFiles /
MXF /
1

and copy your DNx36 transcodes to the "1" folder. Open MC6 and let it create the MMOB file at the bottom of your "1" folder. Drag and drop this file into your empty bin.

So I tried your suggestion and it did yield a better result in that more clips in the batch were online. There were a couple that showed up as offline, but it seemed to be a lot less than on previous attempts. Assuming I import the ALE and merge the metadata to those clips, I'm not losing anything by bypassing the AAF files, right?

If you imported the .msm file, then you can skip the AAF - but the fact that you have offline clips is still an issue - especially when dragging the msm file which represents all clips in that numbered MediaFile folder. But you can merge into those existing master clips. I would do a test on a standalone Media Composer to see why those clips don't link. I've never had such an issue.

Yup, Michael's right. If you're still having issues with certain clips then something in the transcode process went wrong. You may want to try a separate transcode without the RedRocket or try it with Resolve on those specific clips to see if you get different results.

So I figured out the problem and I'm so absolutely PO'd about all of the time it's cost me. The last batch I ran I did a test. As I mentioned before, I was writing my transcodes to a folder on the desktop and then copying them to a media folder on an Isis partition. This time, after copying the media over I checked the size and number of items in the mxf folder against the folder I just copied to and found they were different by about a dozen items and a few gigs. I then copied the files over again and told it to skip files that were already there and checked the folder sizes again and now they were identical. After that, aaf import with online media clips worked flawlessly. The thing that's really aggrivating is that this is consistently true. I have to do this double copy to ensure everything made it over now. Is this an OS bug or something? In any case, thank you guys very much for your advice which totally guided me to the solution.

This is the second production I have heard about the copying issue into ISIS where not all the elements copy over. I forgot about that - but production came back to us saying we weren't delivering all the dailies and we could clearly see them on the target folder on the desktop before the copy into ISIS.

Yeah, it really is a drag. One more thing to concern myself with in the mad rush to the edit.
