Hi guys just a quick workflow question.
Want to edit Scarlet footage in FCP and grade in Color.
Workflow is:
1.Import R3D's in RCX
2.Export to QT proxies for edit in FCP.
3.Import proxies into FCP and lock edit.
4.Export XML from FCP and import back into RCX to relink 4K footage.
5.Export QT Wrapper of Timeline back into FCP.
6.Send sequence To Color for grade.
7.Relink original R3D's in Color timeline and finish grade.

Since i relinked the original R3D's in Color,my Resolution Preset is set to 4k in the Project settings tab.
I want to export to 2k using Pro Res HQ for final output but if i leave the Resolution preset as it is it will output a 4k QT file which i dont want.
If i do change the resolution preset to 1080p does that mean i am grading in that color space and not the 16bit RAW file-or am i still grading in the RAW color space since i'm using the QT wrapper from the original file sent from FCP?

Any help appreciated....

Cheers.

Hi John,

What preset resolution you have chosen does not affect what color space you are grading in. When you grade an R3D in color you are calling into our plugin behind the scenes, which decodes a raw frame and applies
any settings you have made on the RED tab under the Primary In tab.

As far as your workflow goes, you can enhance it a little bit in step 2. When exporting your proxies, you can also choose to export an FCP XML (in the export preset settings). This will make your import in FCP allot easier.

Thanks David for the reply.Yeah forgot to mention I exported anXML with the proxies, does help.I noticed earlier that everything under the RED tab in Color was greyed out, should this be the case?

Also tried the Cinema Tools method as described in White Paper but when I tried to load my folder into a new database it keeps saying that none of my clips have been loaded in?

Not when working with RED media. Can you take a screenshot of this and email to redcinex at red dot com? I haven't been able to recreate this issue myself.

Hey David,

Got the RED color tab sorted it seems....cant seem to export to 2K now for some reason-the qt wrappers that i exported from RCX appear as 4k aspect ratio in FCP as i select auto when prompted for sequence settings
When i export the qt wrapper xml into FCP to send to Color to grade,do i need to choose a 2k sequence setting over auto to output to 2k- i now assume the Color plug in will reference the original R3D anyway so i'll be grading the RAW file?

Thanks for your help....

Hi John,

The QT wrappers generated from RCX will match the aspect ratio of your RED media. I assume by "auto" you mean you are changing your sequence settings to match the clip settings? That should be fine. Check out page 42 of the whitepaper, it explains in detail what you get from Color when grading through Proxies. Basically, for your situation, setting your resolution preset to 2k along with changing your render proxy resolution to Half will be the fastest way to render out 2k. And yes, as I said above you are always grading the RAW file when editing through Proxies.

Cheers,
David
