Maybe it's just me, or maybe it's just my machine, but Redcine-X seems not to work at least as much as it works, and why exactly it doesn't work always eludes me, but is different every time, and I'm never quite sure what I did to fix it. The latest:

I was rendering stuff today, and mid stream, it just stopped rendering. In the render list, there were some files that rendered 100%, and then it just stopped and left the others unrendered. Tried it again, and it rendered one file, then left the rest (though it said it had done several 100%, but all but one was only a 4Kb file). Tried it again, and hence forth, it's giving me a failure message and not rendering anything.

I've reinstalled the app, I've thrown away the user settings folder, I've thrown away the com.redcine-x.plist (or whatever that file is called), I've up graded to a newer version of Redcine-X. I've updated the Rocket driver. And I've just about pulled out all my hair. Something is corrupted, and I can't figure out what.

Oh, and I have two users on my mac, and I have the same problem with both users.

Is there some known way to do a truly clean install?

Thank you, oh large and powerful brain of RedUser.

Frazer

Did you check permissions? Does it work without the Rocket?

We had similar issues before our Rocket died (which was replaced by RED without a problem).

frazer,

Sorry to hear you are having problems.

First please use 351 if you are not already: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=51924

Second, check what Uli said.

You can remove the Preferences.ini file located at
/Users/{Your User Name}/Library/Application Support/red/RedCineX/Preferences

and also remove any com.red.RedCineX.plist files you may have under
/Users/{Your User Name}/Library/Preferences.

Finally if you are still having trouble please turn on verbose logging and send log files to redcinex at red dot com.

Cheers,
David

PS. Please don't jump off a bridge :D

Thanks for the reply.

I don't know about permissions. Can you be more specific about what that is and where to look for it (file name)? I tried a search of my mac for "permissions" and didn't find anything that seemed RED related.

Yes, it fails with and without the rocket. I tried to be exhaustive in my trouble shooting before posting, but I'm drawing a blank.

Thanks,
Frazer

I think Uli means your disk permissions. Do you have write access to the drive? Is it a case-sensitive drive? Things like that.

It could be a corrupt frame in your R3d, I've had to render around corrupt frames using using in's and out's many times.

I'm a little embarrassed, but here's the problem: I'm out of drive space :-( I guess I expected a different response like "drive full" or "no drive space available, instead of "Error processing image for frame 0"

Thanks David for mentioning drive stuff so I could think that far out of bounds.

Thanks everyone for being willing to come to my rescue!

frazer, it happens to the best of us. at least it's an easy fix now.

I would recommend that the title of the thread be changed. It was an honest mistake, so no big deal but the title will be found in searches, and the less fear out there about workflow the better. :-)

Steve, Your point is good, but the reason this problem got my goat, to such a degree, is that I've found RedCine-X to be a bundle of problems. It's particularly crash-centric in my experience, and I've had a number of inexplicable problems that have gone away with a restart, but that have set me back hours of work.

When my camera was new, it was horribly unstable. Now it's solid as a rock (well, that may be a slight exageration...), but RedCine-X, which is a critical part of so many of our workflows is not very stable, and has taken the place of the camera, becoming the shaky piece in the chain. I miss the intuitive and solid RedAlert/RedRushes work flow.

First off good to hear your back on track. Care to share some of your woes with RCX? Im new to this and would like to be ready for any oddities coming my way.
Im already finding some on my own (check my posts) and hoping I dont run into any during crunch time :)
My current problems are not hair-pulling yet (oh god please its all I have!), but the little bugs I can do without.

Hi frazer,

Please download Build 356 and give that a go. You can find it here: http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=53215

356 is as stable as RCX has ever been. In fact, it's a candidate for going up to the support site. If you are having issues, we'd like to diagnose them asap. Turn on verbose logging and send a log file to redcinex at red dot com, along with a complete description of your problem.

Also, for peace of mind, RCX is currently being used on several productions without issue, under heavy stress. With that said, we can't anticipate everybody's particular machine configuration and workflow. If you are having specific problems, again please contact us with a complete description of your problem.

I think my mac partition/drive is case-sensitive? Does anyone know if this is a problem for RCX?.. I only use it under bootcamp xp as i find its more reliable

i think rcx is getting there in terms of stability... they have their hands full. you should check out storm from the foundry. very cheap, and free until march. and the foundry makes the best software i've ever used.
