Guys need some help please.
I don't have enough powerful computer to edit RED RAW footage in full resolution in Final Cut Pro X. So my question is. Is it possible to do all the sharpening and color corrections in REDCINE-X (RedCine X looks much better for sharpening and color correction than Final Cut I think) and than export clips as a MOV files in ProRes codec and do just editing in Final Cut Pro X?
Thank you

I don't see any reason why you couldn't do this but I am not sure why you would. If you can't smoothly play the R3Ds in FCPX you can always edit proxy, do CC and then switch back to originals when you export a master. The color tools in 10.4 are awesome (and if you are reluctant to upgrade to 10.4, the plug-ins for previous versions are equally awesome. I don't know abut sharpening but I would argue that color correction in FCPX is better; and you can even edit the R3D settings directly in FCPX.

Bob -> I tried Better Performance but Its not smooth either

Terry -> OK I can do proxy files but if I do that will my RED RAW settings be still available if I want to change ISO later in editing?

AHA!!! I think I get it now! If I import R3D files into Final Cut Pro X, I can adjust whatever I want and than I can make proxy file from corrected original R3D and can edit nicely and smoothly. But If I want to make any change to already corrected R3D file, Final Cut will delete the old proxy file, I make more changes over the original R3D and than make new proxy file and can continue edit. Is that right? :)

Yes and no. If you want to change the REDRAW settings at any point, you will have to delete the proxies and then change the RED settings and re-render the proxies with the new settings. Takes time but you never completely give up the ability to revert to the original files and tweak them. I would suggest working with the REDRAW settings (ISO,color temp, etc) before you create proxies and then begin your story edit.

Thank you so much for your help Terry! That's what I figured it out a little later :D Thank you again and sorry I'm new to Final Cut and still learning :)

I am a big FCPX fan and I think you will be, too. Good luck.

Thank you and yes FCPX looks really good with 10.4 update :)
One more question, how much sharpening you use to your footage with sharpen tool in FCPX? I shoot 5K WS 5:1 and with CP.2's
Thank you

I shoot almost exclusively with RED (5K) and rarely sharpen footage. I am not sure I am the norm but I just don't see the need.

I'm not a huge fan of sharpening the entire image, but I almost always qualify the eyes of my subject and sharpen just those. I love the way the skin stays soft and flattering, but the eyes pop so perfectly.

I would suggest a small change in the workflow:

1 - Be sure that in RCX, Preferences>General the "Automatically save RMD files" is checked.
2 - In RCX, do all the major adjustments in exposure, WB, ISO, etc. Just enough so the files look good.
3 - Import to FCPX the files that you want with the "Create Proxy media" and "Create optimized media" both checked
4 - Do your edit with the "Proxy media" and "Better performance" used.
5 - If you need to color correct your edit (so adjacent clips look the same), export an XML file.
6 - In RCX Import the XML and just adjust the portions of the clips you used in the timeline
7 - Back in FCPX you will see that now your timeline is corrected (because the RMD files were created original by RCX).
8 - Switch to "Original media"
9 - Export your ended video as a master file with the settings that you want.

This is just a way, using only these two programs.

Other ideas / workflows are welcome here.

Best,

Best,

It doesn't sound bad but I think I'm more for FCPX re-generate/delete proxy files over and over now. But thank you for you workflow :)
Now in FCPX for RED RAW settings and for color correction I close Browser and open/close Inspector window to make a preview window as large as possible and than make proxy file and editing with small preview window and large timeline :)
