Hi folks

I just got my MX camera recently and been really happy with it.

However when we start playing with redcine-x, i notice the result after quicktime export had a tremendous gamma shift as compare from we see from redcine-x player.

My question :
1. Why is this happening ? Is this a bug ?
2. How do we solve it ? I want to see same color between player and encoded result.

Thanks

Rivai,

QT Player seems to be inconsistent depending on the codec you are using. Also, there's a FCP compatibility check box in the QT player's preference, that switches conversion between 1.8 gamma material to show in 2.2 gamma. This was originally there because Mac OS system used to run under gamma 1.8 then FCP was adjusting the 1.8 gamma material to show in 2.2 gamma. Long story short, it's really confusing if you don't realize that what the apps and system software are doing.

We know what works well is the ProRes4444 out from REDCINE-X. ProRes4444 out of REDCINE-X will be pretty much consistent when you bring it in to FCP and Apple Color.
Surprisingly, 10-bit 422 uncompressed out ends up red channel altered in Apple Color.

Gavin is trying to figure things out for awhile and finding out depending on how you push the metadata seems to result in inconsistency in transcoding, too.

So, to answer your questions,
1. No, it's not a bug, it's sort of implementation and you have to choose the right choices to be able to keep it right.
2. Stay with the codec choice that you know you get the right result. ProRes4444 works well. But you can also transcode to something that is consistent to just output the best picture you get from REDCINE-X, then bring them into Apple Color, then grade them to the final look that you are after. Then transcoded results from REDCINE-X won't matter too much.

Did a further test. The 4444 indeed looks good, the only problem is not everyone can read it. Prores looks a bit different but not as much shift as compare to PhotoJpeg.

Thanks for the feedback Ito :)

Ok, so you are simply trying to get the final look to distribute.

My opinion is to edit in ProRes4444 then master as ProRes4444, then convert it to something like H.264 for distribution.
