I'm very new to working with Red and have been trying to get RedCine-X running on my Windows7 machine. I've tried unzipping the "REDCINE-X_build_261" folder from the zip file into the "Program files (x86)" directory but when I double click "Redcine-x.exe" the application opens but is totally unresponsive. I've also tried version 258 but have the same problem.

The installation instructions said it should work on a Windows OS later than XP. Any suggestions on getting it running on this system?

Windows 7/64
Intel i7 960
12Gb RAM

Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the quick reply. I downloaded 261 from the http://www.red.com/support link.

Sadly I'm getting the same problem with v346. The application loads but the interface is unresponsive. I can undock the window that has the file/edit/view/audio/window/help pulldowns but the rest of the interface stays locked and unresponsive.

Not sure if it's worth the mention but I'm using dual monitors and the RedCine-X interface is spread out across the one and a half of them.

Is there a way to reset the interface?

What video card do you have in your system? Actually it would be helpful if you could post more complete system specs. Dual monitors is not a problem, lots of us use it with dual monitors. However, if you're slitting your viewer window across two monitors. However, if the two monitors are driven by two separate video cards, that can be a problem, especially if you're spanning your viewer across. Maximizing the RC-X window should fill one single monitor. Then you can rearrange from there.

Do you have another system you can test on?

My apologies, here are the full spec's of the system:

Windows 7/64
Intel i7 960
P6X58D Premium Motherboard
12Gb RAM
nVidia GTX 480
Soundblaster X-Fi Titanium
256GB SSD - OS
5 TB RAID-0 (Media)
1 TB (scratch/CS5 Project)
Main monitor @ 1920x1200
Second monitor @ 1280x1024

Attached is a screen cap of what I'm seeing when RedCine-X 346 loads up.
http://s205.photobucket.com/albums/bb193/Tayedrummer_photo/?action=view&current=Red_Cine_Desktop.jpg

Essentially the entire interface is unresponsive. I can't select drives, none of the pulldown tabs work, I might as well be clicking on a picture of the interface.

Is there anything that needs to be installed before RedCine-X?

Many thanks for the help thus far.

Hi Paul,

First make sure you are using 346.
I'd like you to try a three things:

1. Navigate to {Working Drive}\Users\{Your Home Directory}\AppData\Local\red\RedCineX\Preferences\ and delete Preferences.ini.
Try and re-run the application.

2. If 1 fails navigate back to this same file and open it for editing. You'll find a section called [logging] with an entry under called "verbose". Make sure it reads "verbose=true".
Restart the application. Hopefully a useful log file will have been generated. If you can send that to us at redcinex at red dot com that would be great.

3. Final idea: Disconnect any external drives you make have, and try and start the app. It looks like it might be getting hung trying to navigate one.

And finally, if there are any other details about your setup you think is relevant, please let us know. Your system specs look fine .. shouldn't be any problems there.

David

I'm going with the external drive theory on this one after looking at the screen shot. There's several removable disks listed and one or more could be the culprit, especially if more than one are sharing the same Firewire, USB or even SATA bus (controller, multiplier conflict on SATA). The Nexto is also a prime suspect in that regard.

Thanks guys,

I deleted the preferences.ini file and restarted the application. This reset the interface but didn't solve the problem.

Currently none of the File/Edit/View/Audio/Window/Help pulldown tabs function. Same goes for any of the tabs, browser windows and sliders. It's like trying to interface with a .jpg of the app.

I did have an eSATA drive (Nexto) connected to the system but I disconnected it, deleted the preferences.ini file again and restarted RedCine-X 346. No luck. The rest of the removable drives you see in the screen cap are the built-in multicard reader but there are no cards in any of the slots.

I've opened the preferences.ini file but it didn't contain a section called [logging]. I've put the contents of the ini file at the bottom of this post.

Nothing else remarkable about my system. These are the peripherals I have attached.
USB Keyboard
Wacom Tablet (USB)
Canon flatbed scanner (USB)
HP printer (network)
NextoDI eSATA drive (eSATA)
Multi-card reader (internal USB)

The full CS5 suite runs smoothly on this system and installed without a hitch.

Here are the contents of the .ini file:

Thanks Paul, got them.
Unfortunately they do not reveal anything interesting.
At this point I would start by disconnecting the multi-card reader and going from there.

Hi Paul,

Sorry this is so troublesome. We're wracking our brains trying to come up with an explanation.

From the screenshot it definitely looks like something funky is going on with the dual monitor setup. Next I would try disconnecting a monitor, and also remove your Preferences.ini file again.

We'll just have to eliminate components until we figure out the cause.

David

Do you have something funky with your dual monitor setup, or specifically, do you have your monitor assignments reversed? Meaning that your primary display is actually on the secondary port of your video card and vice versa? I wouldn't think the resolution mismatch between the two would be a problem... I've got a PC here running a 30" as the primary display and a 24" as the secondary and it works. Core i7 with GTX295... I'll play with monitor configurations, etc.. to see if I can get it to screw up. I know that funky things can happen with the display and GUI at times if you have only a single monitor connected and it's on the secondary port and not the primary...

Do you have any other applications giving you GUI trouble?

Oy Vei, this is making me itch.

No other applications have any video/GUI problems. Computer is very stable and runs all of Adobe CS5 suite without a single problem. I've been playing Starcraft2 on this machine and it doesn't have any problem with the dual monitors/different resolutions either. Personally I like the smaller monitor for my toolbars/bins/etc.

Disconnected the 2nd monitor, deleted the entire 'red' folder from the 'appdata' parent folder, restarted RedCine-X. If I kept clicking away I could eventually select a drive but then it was unresponsive again. The log file is below.

Is there any software that needs to be installed prior to RedCine-X? Does it need to be run from a specific parent directory?
