Maybe the minimum system requirements are on red.com, but I can't find them. I imagine because it's still in beta.
Is there a quick and easy answer to minimum sys requirements on PC?

Thanks

EDIT:
Okay no one is giving it up... :) Or maybe no one knows? Anyway, I just want to verify on a cheap PC in the field. I'm not planing to run an editing suite. Any ideas?

Works fine on a Thinkpad T61, and also on an elderly stationary PC with dual 1.8GHz Opteron and 4GB RAM. Probably not the typical definition of "cheap", but to me "verify" implies high-quality display. Cheap laptops typically come with 6-bit displays.

Hi Jeff,

I went with a mid-level PC setup for my on-set work. Details follow:

$290 - ASUS Maximus Formula motherboard
$300 - Intel Core2Quad Q6600 Bx CPU
$160 - DDR2 4GB PC6400 dual memory
$480 - NVidia GeForce 8800 GTX (EVGA)
$80 - power supply
$40 - Addonics SATA CF reader/writer - 8gb xfer in 3:15
$95 - Kingwin KF-4000-BK Multi-Bay - hot-swap SATA drives
$181 - StarTech RC4080S PC Case
free - 120GB system PATA hard drive
free - 17" CRT monitor
$1626- PC Workstation Total

extras:
$737 - Road Ready RR14UAD24W 19" Rack - I would add set wheels
$215 - Tripp Lite 1500L LCD UPS - defense against gaffers ready to pull the plug ;-)
$266 - Colorvision Spyder 3 Elite

$220 - EVDO Router EVDO Card - provides on-set Internet
$68 - Netgear GS108 Switch

Um, sure. Why wouldn't it?

I'm using it on professional sets with my RED One. Also, I have MacDrive installed so I can read/write Macintosh disks as well.

The workstation;
  • gathers the RED footage to hot-swap SATA drives (or external drives if the client demands);
  • duplicates footage to additional drives
  • reviews and builds best-lights in REDCine
  • is ready with Adobe Production Premium CS2 and Sony Vegas for post

Yes, you are correct about audio only being supported at present via Macintosh Quicktime proxies. My station is currently only a coloring station, not audio playback. That will change as R.D.C. expands their software development to Adobe and the rest. As noted, I can feed both PC and Macintosh post production facilities with my setup.

We have shot both single and double system on the sets my RED One worked. Audio does play back on camera for quick reviews.

Best,

Michael

BTW, getting the SATA ports to support hot-swap required some arcane power-user voodoo involving assuring the latest Intel chipset, installation of an obscure Windows sub-system, and tweaking of BIOS settings. But, once done, it works flawlessly - simply insert and remove SATA drives with no fuss. That includes the hot-swap of CF cards in the CF-SATA reader.
