hey all,
very new to this Red workflow, we got our camera last week.
I'm sure those questions were already answered but I've just spend hours and hours reading about Red camera prod. and post workflow and I'de like some quick answers.
1: RedCine Vs RedAlert, why 2 applications that seemed to do almost the same thing. why can this be just 1 app? when do you use one vs the other?
2: what exactly is RedRushes and when do you use it ?
3: how are you suppose to preview your clips (R3D) on a pro monitor and do a 1 light CC if neither REDCine nor RedAlert has IO options (for Kona 3 for example)? Am I missing something here ?
Again, I apologies if this is been already covered. The absence of manuals makes thing a bit difficult when you're new to the Red workflow.
please share your knowledge!!
many thanks
e.

No you arn't missing anything... simply you can't monitor other that on your computer monitor.

1. RedAlert was the internal RED tool and released before RedCine because it was still in development. Red Alert is through its command-line counterpart RedLine very intergrateable with a lot of automation tools. RedCine is an app which is basically a very crippled onelight/conform station, where you can trick in FinalCutPro xmls of timelines through CrimsonWorkflow. You can now do the same thing with Crimson/rubber monkey and Redline for automated onelights.
RedCine is a really cool idea, that for some reason got crippled.
2. You use it to make quick and dirty offline files, with TC burnin, if you need, and ale files to let AVID systems get the timecode from the generated QT files.
3. You're not...
RC/RA are developing apps by concept, apps where you prepare your files for colorcorrection. A lot of poeple use them as CC apps, though, but they are far from ideal for such applications.

Not Really, a lot of people really like it, and I prefer it when I need to look at shots for development, because of the ability to import (small) projects from FCP. But it should really just accept any CMX EDLs, not crash and purely work... :) It's been the worst press for RED/Assimilate so far, just because it is so obvious that it is totally crippled.

RA/RL/RR are much easier to relate to, as they basically do what you expect them to. RC could really have been a nice little tool.

Hopefully Ians upcoming SDK based Crimson will put RC away for good...
