  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

REDCINE PCvsMAC benchmark

Do you can share any numbers?
How much faster, exactly?

Just install bootcamp on the OctoMac - that would be the only useful test since you need identical hardware.

Yep, I was about to say the same thing. I've got an OctoPC (2 x 2.3GHz Xeon Quad Core)with 8GB RAM, QuadroFX5600 card, I'd be happy to post some numbers for comparison. Still not identical though.

numbers man!

show us the numbers!

:)

The numbers mean nothing. Even if you installed bootcamp on the OctoMac, it's an issue of drivers and system config.

An OctoMac is a PC, only the operating system and drivers are different. Assuming both are configured correctly, XP is slightly faster than OS/X, Vista is slightly slower on the same hardware.

Of course, RedCine code may introduce performance differences between platforms (e.g. Adobe apps run faster on PC due to code issues, unrelated to hardware).

And given the bugginess of Redcine, anything's possible and any actual numbers given the various builds, bugs and unknowns are pretty much useless.

A starting a thread with such a claim -and then not responding to requests for the actual numbers is like...

well, i don't know. It essentially voids the test in my mind.

I would be willing to bet that two similarly configured systems - one windows and one OSX - would perform about the same given identical CPUs and identical builds of RedCine.

Certainly within a few percentage points of each other.

memory for the octomac : use 4x1GB or 4x2GB

memory for the octomac : use 4x1GB or 4x2GB

if you want to do the correct=optimal testing on the new early 2008 macpro's make sure you have the right memory configuration:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=304492
Thus your 6GB ram is NOT recommended : in finalcutpro 6.0.2 you will even not be able to playback at full quality a HD prores codec : check you quality setting of the timeline : high is grayed out ... weird.. i did not yet test if 6.0.3 solves this problem.
So always use 4x 1GB or 4x2GB ( 2 on top, 2 bottom), but dont mix memory sizes on the new early 2008 macpro's. Even 2x2GB is NOT ok !

i think i have something wrong but i want to share some of my results...

Edit1: press CTRL+F1 on REdCine to show up the FPS dialog on top screen.
Edit2: Exporting this well known footage from redrelay: http://www.redrelay.net/owners/0378/r3d/A002_C012_080217_001.R3D took 3min25 (project settings: 1920x1080, output: Quicktime DVCPRO ). Footage is 32sec long, wich give a ratio of 6.40:1

What would the best output setting for quicktime ? i'm trying h264 and will post the result

Edit: took 3min25 for Quicktime DVCPRO 1920x1080

and 7min24 with Quicktime H264 lossless at 25Mbps
