  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

redcamcanada.com Toronto workshop?

Well, seeing as the workshop dates on the website are all summer of 2010, and their claim of "Official Canadian Red Cam Rental Specialists" is rather dubious, considering they seem to be in significant violation of RED's trademarks, I'd be careful if I were you.

If you want something that is actually official and guaranteed to be good, get on the mailing list for REDucation. http://reducation.net/

I could be wrong, but I highly doubt these guys really have permission from RED to have the claim of being "Official RED Cam Specialists of Canada".

Thanks for the link and info.
Thought the same as you after looking at the workshop page.

Seems they have 5 reds and a production facility...so not sure if they are not legit, or just busy and neglecting the workshop page.

Anyone else have any experience with these guys?
I think the production end is called Spotz?

If I was in Toronto right now. I'd meet up with you down at PS for an afternoon and do it all for free. If you want to learn I might be able to hook you up with someone who can help you out.

Keep checking here or I will PM you with a few very decent people in TO.

I do not know these folks, but you might be able to get what you are looking for without going out of pocket.

Stay tuned.

David.

Penny and Jack at PS production services are constantly doing this stuff. I'd call there, mention that I mentioned here on RUser and ask if you can sit in quietly for their next student demo or something.

There is also Ian Sun or Chris Parker here at Reduser who might be able to help.

David.

considering they seem to be in significant violation of RED's trademarks,

Stephen,

I wouldn't be so quick to jump to that conclusion. Copyright and trademark infringement is a VERY complicated area of law - especially when you start considering cross-border jurisdictional issues. (I'm not a lawyer.)

I know Jarred posted a response a while back flatly replying "not legal" to an inquiry by a reduser. Now I can appreciate the strategy of making such a statement from Red's perspective. BTW, I didn't know that Jarred had passed the bar or that case in question had even been litigated.

My prediction is that you are going to see alot more of those types of situations come up in the future. Unfortunately, those issues may have to get worked out in courtrooms. Let's just hope it doesn't distract Red from getting mass quantities of Epics out in the market in 2Q.

Hey Rik,
We at Bling are also happy to share information. We have an open house coming up on the 20th at Sim Video. You should stop by and introduce yourself. I am not sure when the next time we will be having a specific seminar. But there will be plenty of people there on the 20th that would be glad to offer any advice you may be seeking!

Cheers,

That would be in this thread:
http://reduser.net/forum/showthread.php?t=50344

The point of this is not to debate the legality of such a thing, but just that I think that "RED CAM CANADA" is on shaky ground from that alone, and I'm surprised the website still exists at all, and also that I think anointing yourself the "Official Canadian Red Cam Rental Specialists" is a pretty arrogant and misleading thing to do. If I were looking for training, I wouldn't trust them.

Stephen,

My only reaction is to the implied legal "conclusion" in your previous posts. Even your "shaky" ground comment above seems to be rooted more in emotional conjecture.

Having spent 20 yrs in our lit support division, I always take those statements with a grain of salt. Unless someone leads with "Section X, Chapter Y, Paragraph Z" of some legal code, it's been my experience most comments are super-over simplified concepts at best.

As I stated previously, we already see efforts to "differentiate" firms using Red equipment in the industry, and I predict we'll see more.

Case in point, Steve Gibby pretty much set the standard for Red "firsts". As others have come along trying to make similar claims, they have been forced to modify those statements. Instead we see... Company ABC -- "first in Europe", Asia, or wherever.

BTW, in the US, "puffery" is a legal term. From the Wikipedia entry...

******************
The United States Federal Trade Commission (FTC) defined puffery as a "term frequently used to denote the exaggerations reasonably to be expected of a seller as to the degree of quality of his product, the truth or falsity of which cannot be precisely determined." [2]

The FTC stated in 1984 that puffery does not warrant enforcement action by the Commission. In its FTC Policy Statement on Deception, the Commission stated: "The Commission generally will not pursue cases involving obviously exaggerated or puffing representations, i.e., those that the ordinary consumers do not take seriously." e.g., "The Finest Fried Chicken in the World."

You should jump on this invite. Jesse is ver knowledgable and I mentioned Chris Parker in my other post. Chris is also part of Bling digital.

Have a blast !

There have been several cases on this forum of people using "RED" in their company name, and being politely asked to change it. Most people seem to comply before legal action is taken. One example at the fore of my mind is the RED Ninjas becoming the 4K Ninjas.

So, from past experience, I think it is safe to say that RED does take exception to companies using the word "RED" in their name, and my only goal was pointing out the irony I see in a company calling themselves "Official Canadian Red Cam Rental Specialists" when the truth is that they are much closer to being sent a cease & desist letter from RED than they are to be confirmed as "Official," whether either actually happens or not.

Think of someone calling themselves the "Official Canadian Mac Pro Sales Specialists" and consider how long that would last.

David-Thanks for pointing me in a direction.

Jesse
- thanks for the invite!
Unfortunately I'm already set for a full day Thursday and I can't make it there in time. :(

Anyone I can ask for if I were to drop in on a Friday afternoon?

------------------

Some info on what I'm doing and hoping to find with redcam.
-Amateur director and partner coming from CG background....some experience shooting HDSLR
-Working on an ambitious, independent project
-Aiming for film quality, 30 sec teaser for promo of scifi VFX Film

Samples of level of quality/detail @ www.softdistortion.com

Looking at redcam to get a higher resolution format for better VFX and comp quality.
Live action/CG integration, 3D tracking, Green/Blue screen

Will be looking for a DP to handle the cameras, but would like to get informed to a level proficient enough to operate the camera and handle an Adobe (it's what we have) workflow for file processing.

I'd also like to build relationships with artists I can learn from and possibly work with in future.

Stephen,

I agree with your assessment of Red's position, however, you illustrate my point completely with your examples. Clearly we are seeing the difference between voluntary decisions vs. legal compulsion (4K ninjas).

It seems your "Cam" comments would only strengthen their legal position (all else equal) since most readers in this thread have agreed with the "implausibility" of the "puffery" statements. Again, from my own personal experience, I just see this type of thing more often here in the US.

I doubt one would have to be a lawyer to understand that claiming to be any sort of "official" representative of another company, without permission, won't fly. Do you think I can be an "official" tech support for Intel, or an "official" SAP business partner or the "official" northern California HP solutions provider, without specific and written approval of those companies? Even if you don't agree, I think Stephen has it right when he suggests staying away from a company that is claiming to be the "official" representatives of RED when it is highly likely they are not.

Guys...I understand that legality is an issue to some of you and I won't say it's unimportant, but sheesh.

I was having a short lived feeling this forum was a bit different than the others I'm on....but I see it's the same old back and forth debating, thread derailing issues.

One thing I would like to know...I had a reply offering a meet with an amazing cinematographer which was pretty exciting, but when I came back his post was gone. I have his info and will contact, but WTH.

From my experience only a mod can delete a post, no?
Which is a head scratcher...either the guy is bipolar and suddenly freaked out and asked a mod to delete his post, or someone else got his post removed on him.

Anyway, for the record on the OP.

Regarding LIFT and www.redcamcanada.com
Their reply to my query on feedback for redcamcanada was as follows>

"We cannot afford any feedback on REDCAM CANADA. They purchased an ad in our weekly ebulletin us to promote their services.
As outline in our ebulletin Non-LIFT workshops and commercial services advertised not necessarily endorsed by the Liaison of Independent Filmmakers of Toronto."

Also an initial email to redcamcanada directed us to a link to pay for the course. A second email asking for clarification on the discrepancies on how long the course was, ( various info stated 4hrs, 6hrs, 8hrs, one day or two day) has received no reply so far.
