The point is that RED takes people back to the status quo from 1997.
That was a situation where people had such poor performance with NLE's that they continued to use linear tape to tape editing for most work.
Been there, done that, i've been editing since the 80's ;-)
And sure, that's one way to see it - it seems every time computers are up to the task of relatively fluid workflow at the current de facto video technology, something new comes along. From DV to HD to 4K to whatever comes next. The bleeding edge of technology is always ahead of the average consumer's computing power (i guess that's the way it will always be) - but at the same time, yesterday's bleeding edge runs on the cell phones more or less ;-)
The other way to see it is to simply be at awe at what can be done with today's cheap home computers. As said, it's possible to finish 4K on a laptop. Think about it for a second...
