  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

red zoom 17-50 on alexa?

what Florian is talking about is what worked for me too (I ran into Florian at Duclos, nice to meet you Florian). i bought the 17-50 today from Red and it would not mount on the Alexa, so i went straight to Duclos, and we had to do two things: remove the tabs (which Matt Duclos will be cutting down a little) and turn the pl mount an extra turn looser (it was too tight to mount the thicker red lens). I was finally able to mount the lens on my Alexa, and I am so happy to finally find a lens, in that range, that is available now, and relatively inexpensive. I plan to use it also on my F3, which i tested and it mounted just fine. winning.

btw, the 17-50 looks mighty cool on the Alexa.

That loosening extra turn sounds very wrong(unless you've missed telling us something) I assure you that PL mounts , RED or not- are very precisely machined- because they just must be... The extra turn sounds like something is not seating right there- big trouble looming....
Maybe Matt can chime in here...

ah, bad news. when i got back the pl ears that were modified and tried to put the lens in, it did not work. apparently it still hits the little lip on the ears (hard to describe, but if you look at the camera you will understand), so apparently, that modification we did will work for the red 18-85, but still not enough for the 17-50. i can mount the lens with the ears completely removed, but that just won't do. i sent the lens back to red. boy, i hope they give me my money back...

@Ryan: sorry, i did not think to take a photo of it when we had the ears off, and once we put the ears back on it would not fit, so i got no photos to show.

We did NOT loosen the mount an extra turn. There were two interference problems with the 17-50mm. The housing at the rear of the lens, just in front of the stainless steel PL mount. And the ears on the Alexa. I trimmed the ears down but didn't do anything to the lens as Lenny did not want to proceed with the modification.

The modifications required to fit the 17-50mm to an Alexa are fairly minor. The ears on the PL mount of the Alexa are just a tad too big, same issue as on the 18-85mm and Alexa. The second issue was the rear of the 17-50mm lens housing and the rotating lock on the PL mount of the Alexa. The problem isn't the result of negligence from either company, it's simply a unforeseen interference problem. Can't please everyone all the time. Either way, the problem can be fixed with a little but of precise machining. Not a deal breaker if you ask me.
