Hello all,
Looking for any advice on shooting with RED, green screen and tungsten, I've heard various stories of potential problems. I thank you all in advance.
Peter.

Works for Us

Works for Us

We've shot 2 mid budget (low 6 figure) commercials entirely in studio on greenscreen, tungsten, with great results - every shot every setup was green, keyed and composited. Most recently, post keyed in after effects, importing red directly via the Adobe plugin. The usual rules and guidelines, tricks, etc apply to shooting and keying greenscreen, and shooting and exposing red in general. Post was very pleased with red vs. baked video files for keying, although they initially wondered about "undersaturated" greens vs. older baked video jobs, but got over it when they actually began working in AE with the red plugin. Have also done it using a ProRes workflow escaping R3d land in the front of the workflow with good results.

What specifically are you worried about?

I had heard there were some noise issues with tungsten lighting for green screen,
But you have put my mind at ease, Thank you Anson. We will also shoot a 7D as a second camera, I'll let you know how that cuts.
Regards, Peter.

Hi Peter,

Those concerns are probably 15 months old. After about build 16 or so it really wasn't an issue.

I'll be interested in your report of keying the 7D, or is that not greenscreen?

Cheers,

Jim

GS works great, just don't underexpose.

If you're having a hard time, try developing @ higher rez to pull the key.

I also find it infinitely easier to pull keys from log dpx's than anything else.

Develop the images as "to the right" and as high you can without burning them with full debayer to a 10-bit 444 log thingy, and you will probably pull the easist key you have ever done, even with tungsten light.

Cheers!

G

Tungsten's not an issue any more, just give it enough exposure and you'll be fine. I shot on build 30 last week, greenscreen, tungsten and the post house says that it's pretty much a one click key.
there's a 4khd still here http://files.me.com/skellycinematography/aitpt4 if you want to try a key.

I've been pulling really good keys right off Pro Res, though full body with shoes is still a bit messy.

So if I use LOG DPX I would get a noticeably better key? I certainly understand the math as to why this would be, just checking to make sure it's worth the extra steps.

Then again, if I'm keying anyway, it's not really an extra step is it?

I love doing that, but then I love log DPXs over prores anytime...

Peter,
I forgot to mention that I'm putting the greenscreen at around 55 ire (apparently 56 ire gives you full green saturation in photoshop). It worked for me anyway and there doesn't seem to be any real consensus on the proper level that I could find. I've shot a lot of greenscreen but wanted to establish a constant so I started using the ire levels instead of "1 stop under key" method.
What are other people exposing their chromakey at?

What plugins do you guys use to key in AE? I've been searching around to see what really works well while not costing me an arm and a leg :)
