  • Hey all, just changed over the backend after 15 years I figured time to give it a bit of an update, its probably gonna be a bit weird for most of you and i am sure there is a few bugs to work out but it should kinda work the same as before... hopefully :)

Red will get optical viewfinder!

I do not believe that this design will allow the use of 35mm PL mount lenses. The one pictured is for 2/3" B4 mount. But I could be wrong.

From P+S Technik, optical viewfinder pdf:

"P+S Technik concentrated its knowledge about optical viewfinders into a solution for the
SI-2K Digital Cinema Camera including an 50/50 prism, left eye usability and eyesight
adjustment. The unit is compatible with standard accessories for optical cine viewfinders.
It is part of the modular accessory structure for the SI-2K camera to offer a maximum of
flexibility.
Save your investment and use your 2/3” lenses with the SI-2K Digital Cinema Camera. A
combined version of SI-2K Mini camera head and optical viewfinder for B4 mounted 2/3”
video lenses will be available in quarter IV 2007. Other versions for 16mm cine lenses,
35mm cine and still photography lenses will follow."

excellent! now this offers probably the most flexible lens option of all aolution to red. think we will get one.

Will display goggles, like gamers used to wear, plug in to the RED anywhere? Any reason they wouldn't act as double-eyed viewfinder?

Red only has HDMI and SDI output's, none of those goggles had suitable unputs AFAIK. I used to have the Sony Glasstron back in the day, cool for watching movies and playing Quake ! :)

would be good with rotating mirror. Turning the Red into a CP-16 is not that cool.

I´m wondering why there haven´t been more reactions on that thread. I thought optical viewfinder will be a terrific addon. Maybe I´m wrong...

'Cause the EVF kicks so much ass that it looks like an optical viewfinder. I don't think too many people are going to care about this product once they use RED's EVF. Plus RED is a digital camera. I want all the info in my viewfinder. Maybe the next guy doesn't - let him switch it off - but I'm used to a heads up display with all my info right there.

I agree. Don´t get me wrong, it wasn´t my wish to get one. I´m used to work with electronic vf. And I think I will be very happy with REDs. But there have been many questions, even here on reduser, about the opportunity to have opt. vf.
Especially here in Germany I´ve heard this question to often. A lot of cinematographers and ac´s are very sceptical about using something different than this holy-arri-grail-equipment

I got the same response from dps. The optical viewfinder of the D20/D21 got really a lot of attention here in Germany.

As I understood, the ILM can't be changed on job to job basis but has to be changed from P+S themselves. And lowering the ASA to 160 is a BIG price to pay.

As much as I'd love to have an optical viewfinder, I will keep my Red as it is. But for a rental with multiple Red Ones on their shelves, it will be a good idea to have a modified one to get more potential customers.
