A suggestion: Red Digital Cinema -specific wiki. Online, accesible by all. A place to gather crucial info, submitted by the best minds here* and by staff/owner of Red. Managed/hosted officially by Red

Include:

- All about Red company
- All [about] Red Digital Cinema(RDC) technology
- Techniques
- Lists of cinematographers, production houses, post houses
- Lists of feature films, shorts, commercials, industrial films, and more
- Lists of books, dvds, other informational and educational media
- Online link lists to articles about RDC
- also be cool to have an iPhone app that has custom wiki access to the above info

So it's like this RedUser forum, but all the information has been distilled and honed into a structured presentation vs. scattered among threads and posts. Anyone can contribute*, but RDC has final edit/moderation. There are a lot of bright minds here who have vast interesting knowledge and like to share it. Maybe this could be the venue since it would be a "living" document.

*The idea being that the big timers like say Mr. Jannard and staff, cinematographers like D. Mullen, JT Mathers, production and post house leads etc. would take the lead, while others could repost information posted, discussed and clarified on RedUser or contribute to the multitude of lists.

(Note: Some of the above ideas were mentioned by OffHollywood and others in various threads).

@Dan.. oh red-wiki.net does sound familiar... hmm.

@ ericyoung (below this post) - yes.. I should have written that in my suggestion because that's what I was thinking. People (including myself) want a trusted go-to source.

I think it'd have to be one started up by RED themselves.

The problems with the little ones started up by individuals are:
a) Not controlled/moderated by "recognised" RED authority.
b) Can disappear at any time - user hasn't got time, money, manpower required to maintain it, or keep ownership of it.
c) People feel like they are doing work to help the individual Reduser initially rather than the community. Also initial information entry to give it critical mass is an onerous task.

I can put this one together. Allow me to create a Red Digital Wiki site just like Wikipedia but for all things about Red. Will have it ready in about two weeks from Today.

@Felipe - I think it's a great you want to help, and not a technical challenge to host a wiki.. BUT.. I agree with the guys that it really needs to come from Red, and it be their project.

edit: I added a wish on the wishlist: custom, Red Wiki iPhone app to access the Red Wiki. :)

I totally understand the above mentioned points Sarah, I just tough I could help creating a wiki site given the fact that I already have some knowledge and experience. Creating interacting websites is one of my passions. I am one of the moderators and editor of the Spanish Wikipedia. Thanks again for the comment do, yes I agree that it should be better and successful if is a Red project.

BTW, I just launched a Filmmaker/Photographer community site. Given the fact almost all of us are familiar with sites like Facebook, Youtube, Twitter, Wikipedia and vBulletin, I will get the best of those sites and integrate them in a single site towards the Cine photographer niche.

This is the site so far: www.cinephotography.net, any input is welcome. And you are welcome to join.

Cool, Felipe! If it is something they want to do.."have an official Red wiki"... Maybe you can help Red get it off the ground and they can manage/take it over(move to their servers/hosting) once it is functional? --I know they have a close-knit, small staff and may not have time to get it going.. we do want them to focus on providing the world with awesome gear as the priority! Just an idea.

No one is stopping anyone from making a wiki- but it's not likely to become the official one without major critical mass which so far hasn't gelled with all the previous attempts. Bottom line it it's just too much info and too much work for a volunteer to take on.

Good idea, I will take the initiative, as you said get it off the ground and them I can passed it over to the proper people. Is not the first time I do something similar with a site for a non-lucrative community involving a wiki project.

@Felipe - I don't know.. if maybe you should check in, or wait until someone from Red gives a nod? Even if you get it up and running for them, and they are interested in the project.. staff from Red may want to give you input before you get started?

I hear ya. I just thought I'd float the idea.. as information gets repeated a lot on these boards, and there are a growing number of Red users (camera and post production) all the time! I imagine when Scarlet hits it will bring in another significant mass of followers/learners?

I believe Felipe is looking at "framing up the house of Red Wiki" vs. providing all the content..? (Felipe?)

Exactly that was the original idea, just providing the platform or "framing up the house". No providing any content at all. I would just use the valuable content from here, what has been already approved by the moderators and add it to the wiki.

Well definitely contact RED since everything with RED in the name needs to be checked off by the big guy and the team...

I was thinking of doing one of these few days ago cause it would've been nice to have EVERYTHING in one neat place but then I realised RED kind of already does that with REDUser and they are shaping it up slowly...

RECON has that thread with everything thats important being said and no comments from community so its noiseless.

The rest of REDUser is pretty much a giant cluttered wiki though with the search box it makes it some what easier.

RED also has the FAQ guide.

We could just get a sticky with Post Houses and addresses on here...

I'm pretty sure we started off with one of those threads on independent films etc. on RED

The rest is surely do-able on here itself, it just requires a lot of user input. Moderators are already here so really its down to maintaing them...which is the only issue I guess...

@Imran - RedUser is a wonderful source! ..but a bit cloodgie when it get down to finding answers quickly.. unless you post a thread, and hope for the best.. and then when the best do answer.. sometimes those notes get buried over time.. especially within one of those 1000+ post threads!

There are some great steps happening already in making RedUser more concise, but a wiki would hack off all "comments", and yet still be a living document and far more non-linear and structured reading. Ideally, some of the content should be very printable in case someone needs it... like say.. a list of Red post houses, or Red cinematographers in Los Angeles.

I can see a wiki providing links to certain topics or threads back here at Red User...

just thoughts.

I thought this was maybe the idea behind Crucial Ordinance. But that doesn't seem to be how it turned out.

Maybe someone could just start a thread where others can post a link to other threads and give a brief explanation of what's being discussed in that thread. If it's not relevant then the post could be reported as such and the mods could make a decision whether or not to delete it.

Personally, I just watch for people I consider knowledgeable and read their posts.

It would be cool to see a complete list of features. Sort of like Stuart's "Features by build" sticky, but a list of all the features included in the current release build. But then have each feature listed be a link to a full description of how to use that feature.

Here it is: Red Digital Wiki

Let's add content.
Very cool Felipe. Not being technical, I won't add anything. But I've bookmarked the page so if others who are technical decide to add.

Edit: After clicking on the link that Curran posted, I realize that all things RED is a moving target, and anything posted today may be changed tomorrow. Without absolute attention, nothing can be truly considered relevant from day to day. I guess I will continue paying focused attention to Reduser.net.
