Just thought I'd post a concept. I'm in the Dreaming Stage. I'm not even sure if any of this is possible. Just thought it could be a cool product.

Hardware
Realtime MPG-4 H.264 Encoder
Built in 3G / Wifi Card (cellphone data plan / switches to Wifi where available)
Main Power - Provided from Camera Battery
Backup Power - Internal Battery (Used while changing Main Camera Battery)

Software
iPhone SDK product - Ability to mark in and out points, Good / Bad Takes / export edl information
Final Cut Pro Plugin - Ability to digitize the MPG-4 stream with timecode / Relink with high res Red footage during post
Web Interface - Clients could remotely sign in and watch shoot anywhere in the world.

Web, iPhone, and Final Cut Pro digitize interface concepts to follow.

Even as a basic monitoring solution it could be good, but I think there'll be some pretty big technical hurdles. Wireless bandwidth being one of them. I'd steer clear of 3G - it's unlikely anyone's really going to want to have access to the data from more than a few hundred feet away and more direct options offer better bandwidth and management.

Great Idea!!

Great Idea!!

I too was thinking about being able to stream a live feed via a built in web server of sorts. This would be a great idea, and would allow anybody with access to the internet to watch the live feed from there laptop, iPhone, or iPod Touch.

And now that the iPhone / Touch SDK is out, and third party development has started, this could be closer then we think. I think this idea is not necessarily limited to the Red, and would be fantastic!

cheers
Colin

I could be wrong - but I don't think you are ever gonna get TC + audio out the HDMI on the Red. Stuart?

I do HOPE and PRAY we get TC + embedded audio in the Preview, or HD-SDI outs.

is wireless data really useful as an editing proxy? I think of it as a medium of last resort, just because dropouts seem a lot more frequent with any kind of wireless gear.

video assist

i don't think the intention with this idea would for editing, but it could be an alternative video assist technology. Many people I see working on set now are sporting iPhone's and iPod Touch's. I think it would be great to hop to a secured website and watch a high quality live stream from the camera on your Touch.

Just a neat idea I think.

love this idea... Dylan when is shot wrangler going live?

We're building prototypes now, should be testing in the next few weeks hopefully. I'm glad I'm not trying to make something really complicated -- like a camera :)

To be honest we've thought about wifi stuff for SolidStore, but the bandwidth is lacking, and we'd have to do all manner of fancy conversion stuff to make anything useful, which I don't think will be possible.

That said, I have some other ideas which we'll be exploring once we have SolidStore shipping.

This sounds like a solution in search of a problem. Until someone invents wireless electricity, film sets are going to have cables everywhere anyway, what's a few more? Why jump thru hoops to watch videoassist on an iPhone when a nice clean 26 inch monitor is 100x easier?

On the other hand, it'd be nice to monitor your 2nd Unit shoot from another continent. :)

Lord Of The Rings had 2nd and 3rd unit monitoring from all over NZ back to where the 1st unit was so PJ could keep tabs on them. Pretty cool.

That system had a lot more bandwidth than a 3G connection. I believe they were using microwave and satellite links from either Kordia (then BCL) or from Telecom Broadcast Solutions. These are links designed to carry an SDI video feed.

Whoa! I can see no TC, but audio should definitely be included on HDMI.

Actually first priority would be video on the HD-SDI prev, as of yesterday. It'd be pretty cool since the Blackmagic HDLink box decodes HD-SDI audio and sends it out a L-R RCA. Then you could go into a small mixer and a bank of headphones, poor man's Comteks!

wireless electricity has been around for several years.

Actually Nicola Tesla presented it nearly 100 years ago before he was dumped by the U.S. in favor of Edison ;-)

Uli
